Am I Triping ? Mercari question / bug

Hey !

I came across a weird pricing bug (I think) on Mercari, an item formerly priced at around 5000 yen is now at a whoping 9 999 999 yen :skull:

Has it ever happened for you ? I am a bit perplexed. I guess the item sold, or is no longer available and Mercari is pricing it absurdly high for a reasonā€¦
When opening the item link, the price is ā€œ???ā€ so thatā€™s even weirder.

Here is the said item link and a pic !

Someone probably made an offer so the seller just ā€˜reserved itā€™ without taking down the listing. They were probably requested to make an exclusive listing so that the person who made the offer can buy it and one way sellers can do that is to put in the max or any absurd amount so that other buyers donā€™t purchase it, when they are creating the listing.

The ??? was a new feature added by Mercari earlier this year which enables buyers to make offers to the sellers. Like a OBO feature on ebay. So if you have a way to contact the seller, you can send in your offer for the listing. If the seller accepts then they will make it exclusive for you to buy it.

In short, sellers do this to avoid the listing being sold to buyers and the high / absurd price just acts like a placeholder till the seller gets the required offer.

Cheers!

Oh alright ! Thanks a lot for the information

Yea, I am not sure the ??? Thing works so well. I have seen a few examples of the listing switching between ??? And a very high value. So it is normal to get confused on what is the sellers intention. However, the high 9999999 pricing usually means the listing is reserved for some reason.

The other change Mercari JP made this year is make user comments invisible to international/ non account holders. So there is probably a conversation happening in the comments, pertaining price negotiations, which you maybe not aware of. I got recently aware of this change and I personally donā€™t like it. It ruins the complete negotiation aspect of the listings.

Cheers!

The ??? Price means that domestic buyers can make an offer. Sellers can choose to accept or reject that offer. The Ā„9999999 is a placeholder value that Mercari uses to assign the item a value for cross functionality with other site features.

For example: making a bundled offer on a ??? marked item will default the price to Ā„9999999
