Collection regrets?

So I was thinking about things I’ve done to wrong my beloved collection and was curious what other peoples regrets were.

For me personally its two things, selling my jungle booster box that I paid retail for(Because I young and convinced it was never gonna go up in price) and trading away my Jolteon gold star for a common Shuckle back in my primary school days :sob:

I regret not buying 1st Ed base booster boxes when they released in 1999, I cut myself a little slack though as I was only 7 at the time with no disposable income and living in Australia

I regret getting caught up in all the sets I had missed while being away from Pokemon instead of focusing on my original goal of completing base set 1st edition.

I started buying way too many cards and got overwhelmed. I’ve since sold a lot of those to focus on base set.

Every time this thread comes up I get so depressed I’ll have to pass:(
All you have to do is look at the market for the last 18 years to see my ups and downs lol.

Where do you live now if you don’t mind me asking?

Traded my mint gold star mew for a Plasma shiny Zard back when they first came out. Mew was so cheap back then. Sigh. I literally got it for free and didnt know what i had. Young me sucked.

I’ve been feeling this recently, I realised I own almost none of my favourite cards from the earlier sets. Maybe I’ll start getting a few regular base set psa cards from time to time.

I thought it would be enjoyable to just start buying any card that I remotely liked and I’ve noticed I get way more enjoyment out of fewer cards that I love.

Might be a good idea to reduce your collection and use those funds to buy a couple high end cards you’ve always wanted. I sold a bunch of cards to get a 1st edition Charizard and I couldn’t be happier.

Getting away from goals removes the fun of it and you end up just storing away cards you don’t really care about. Let’s downsize together!

This is how i collect, i have a few WoTC sets but i only tend to buy what i really like… so i don’t really have anything i dont want and don’t really sell all that often as a result, however i do regret abandoning Pokemon Tcg as hobby in my childhood but it just wasn’t affordable for me, i still have my old binder somewhere which i keep seperated from what i do now.

In the end i always believed the only thing that mattered is that i’m happy with what i got, and i never did anything to impress others…

Im kind of doing the same, I overwhelmed myself with new sets and now plan to sell 90% of them and focus on my other goals and investments…if i ever sell these lot

Yea my regret is spending thousands on new sets when I got back into Pokemon, its taken a year or 2 to realize what I want and should be doing.

Im more careful now with what I buy (generally, but still new to the hobby after so long), however it doesnt stop me having all these excess cards! I aim to try sell as many of them as possible, and use that money to focus on my refined goals for my collecting etc.

I will add a wants thread soon with a list of things I want

I regret selling my base, fossil , jungle and rocket complete sets (all 1st ed and gem mint) a few years ago for peanuts because i had money problems and was to proud to ask my parents for help

doing that it felt i sold a part of my childhood and soul :sob:

I regret continually buying many of the same cards over and over again because I wind up freaking out over money. That is a current day problem and my other would be letting my mom put all of my Pokemon cards into 4-5 gigantic garbage bags and give them all away as a kid. When I’d get into Yu-Gi-Oh or Beyblade or whatever came along next she’d always think I’m done with one and onto the next.

I regret not continuing to collect when I returned to collecting in 2007 and 2010. Gold Star regret hangover blues.
Also I paid way too much for my Breakpoint & Fates Collide Ultra rares, before the big boom happened.

I definitely regret, back in 2010, not getting the jungle, fossil and base booster boxes… And the charzards and the blastoises… OMG the Blastoises, all 1st edition of course… And most of all, being an intermittent collector the following years because I was denying my love for the cards, obviously this denial had to come to an end, and I am happier now  Just crying inside when I see the current prices and remember the older days

Same.

Another thing I regret is mixing cards I got on eBay with my childhood collection. I should have kept them seperate so I could keep the cards I pulled when I was a kid forever.

i’ve thought about opening a “childhood binder” thread but then i figured most people either don’t have it anymore or mixed new stuff with it lol.
let me know if anyone would like this and i’ll open it.

but yeah dude that sounds like a total bummer :C

Still Aus, 1st Ed base boxes were only available in the US

I’ve said this many times, but:

Selling lots of Charizards from my old Charizard collection, such as Charizard ex and Charizard Gold Star D: I’m not too mad about the ex anymore and I got myself a Japanese one recently to make up for it, but the Gold Star… That still hurts. Maybe I’ll make up for the Gold Star too and get myself a Japanese one before the unlimited gets too expensive, we will see.

I also sold a Secret Rare Charizard from Plasma Storm on eBay which I pulled from a pack myself and it got lost on the mail. Lost the card and lost the money as I had to refund the buyer.
Everything is Charizard related salt it seems  I haven’t made any big regrets apart from those and the only reason I sold them was simply because I was a student and needed money that time. It’s been years already, recently nothing has made me regret so I’ve learnt from my past mistakes I think.
