Do we think so? I wasn’t surprised when EX’s dropped in price with the new, better-looking EXs, but I thought they’d rebound, especially Charizard-EX, by now. Did I overlook something?
Edit: realizing the way I phrased this may sound like I bought bunch of EX cards hoping they’d go up – not the case, lol. I’m studying economics/finance in college and am a geek about it so I like making assumptions/predictions with these things, obvs. hoping to be right and hoping I know the underlying causes, lol.
How do you mean friendo? PSA 10 examples seem to be holding steady in my book. Was there a time where they were regularly $400+ ? Recently we’ve only had fluctuations of $350-450 and is still the most expensive english ex card out there, barring some exceptions (TMvsTA Suicune, Full art Flashfire Charizard, etc). I think pretty soon that $450 mark is going to start sticking a bit harder and push toward $500+.
But with that being said, I also think it is an underappreciated Charizard, most likely because it wasn’t the premier zard of that era and has to live in the shadow of Gold Star Charizard.
Thanks for the reply peacock! I should have specified that I look at ungraded as a baseline (PSA can sometimes be inflated bc of population) – ungraded NM/Mint Charizard-EX’s hovered around $100 back then, dropped for a bit while Pokemon lost steam, and are currently back to around $100, whereas other cards (esp. charizards) have skyrocketed since then. And since FRLG is a sought-after set in general, I’m surprised that it’s currently sitting at $100. Wondering if it’s because FRLG was produced much more or if it’s because it’s easier to pull (since it’s an EX). Or it could be, as you said, because it stood in the shadows of Charizard Star (which I hadn’t thought about ).
That said, EXs across the board haven’t gone up (and some, like Wailord EX have significantly gone down) contrary to their respective sealed boosters/boxes skyrocketing (even the ones without premium star cards).
I think mostly everything in the EX series still has a lot of potential to grow in the future, especially sealed boxes, and PSA 10 cards as it becomes nearly impossible to find high end ungraded Gems.
The most underrated part in my opinion is the artwork, many of the dual types are beautiful, and I think there is a lot of iconic Gen 3 cards included.
What keeps their prices low is that the ex cards from the third gen ex series is that the artwork is a bit generic and there was no real interest in the hobby during this era. The 3-D rendered artwork doesn’t convey the same character like the gold stars do. Some look indiscernible from their background:
I personally like this Groudon but it’s far removed from what came out 1-2 years before Hidden Legends was released.
Some look like they’ve been 3D printed:
If you want to get in early your best bet are all the ex from Team Rocket Returns (TRR), Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur from ex Fire Red/ Leaf Green and I guess Suicune ex.
The TRR ex have a certain consistent character to them none of the other ex cards have so I can see them being extremely popular in the future. It’s also a re-imagining of the OG Team Rocket set which people love.
It’s hard to ignore suicune since the PSA 10 sold for $600. At that price the PSA 9s which sell for around $40 seem extremely undervalued, you can’t even find graded copies on eBay right now.
Maybe in time they’ll grow on people or become the next sought after thing to collect. Who knows? People might go crazy for LV X. cards before these (doubt it though). I see Umbreon and Espeon becoming extremely sought after in the future for the eeveelution collectors but they’ll still always be overshadowed by the Gold stars.
Like everything in this game, give it time. Iconic Pokemon that look cool will be the first to go up.
