I was curious how many of us here have pulled a Base Set Charizard from a booster pack? If you have, please share your story! I’m curious to see how many of us had playground bragging rights back in the day

My brother and I each pulled one as kids. However, when I found our childhood cards like a decade ago I could only find one. Pretty sure I sold mine as a kid hahaha
I’ll share my story. I was little and my Mom had taken me to Target. As always, I had to stop by the card section and convinced/begged my Mom to get me some cards. She said I could pick out one pack so of course I grabbed a 3rd party repackage of six Base boosters bundled together and put it in the cart. Somehow my Mom did not notice and I successfully brought the bundle home. Once I was home I opened up all six boosters and on the second to last booster I pulled the Charizard!
2 times! One as a kid, then again when on memory lane. The kid story is not as good and has no detail, while the adult occasion is a better story but had good odds since it was a box.
As a kid I was so fortunate to have shadowless out on the east coast. My first cards were shadowless and I would beg mom to take me to this little sundries shop reeking of incense and various aromas of wood and flora. Like a treasure shop or sorts, random base boxes at the counter and no other sets even in later months/year. I had pulled many holos, but shadowless charizard was one of ‘em! It was incredible but blastoise was my fav .
Funnily enough my OP from my collection thread shares the story of my adult pull that I’ll just leave there to read. Pretty amazing story, it being the last pack!
Edit: also funny this was 2013 same year as ftw below. Was a good year to take a ride with it being one minumum wage paycheck for a box
Never pulled one as a kid as I couldn’t afford many booster packs. When I first got back into collecting as an adult with adult money it was 2013, one of the first things I brought was a sealed base set booster box for £400 as I wanted to open one to fulfill my childhood pack ripping dreams. My brother and I used to play and trade a bit when we were younger so when I opened the box I took a few packs with me when I met up with him one day. We opened them and there it was a base set Charizard! That Charizard is now sitting in my base set binder and will probably stay with me forever or until I’m very old
There are three Base holos I never pulled as a kid: Clefairy, Chansey and Charizard.
Clefairy I traded for quite early. Whatever. Never got Chansey, eventually I caved and bought the Lightning Bug theme deck, not one of my finer moments.
But the Charizard…that damn Charizard. My favorite card, the one haunting my dreams. I did manage to pull one…from a booster with a Gyarados on it. Ended up trading a binder page’s worth of holos for the real deal through a chance encounter in a card store.
Needless to say, when I began spending adult money the first order of business was to pull several of them, which I did.
Does evolutions count
It counts as long as it was a good memory for you
No, but I was beside my friend when he pulled it. I got a Blastoise which was overshadowed. We had enough money to buy one pack each. Wish I could find all my old cards.
Not only did I never pull a Charizard, I had the amazing luck of never pulling a single holo from a pack of Base. I opened packs nearly every weekend, but it was almost always the same darn trainer cards in the rare slot (shakes fist at Clefairy Doll).
I did pull the Charizard holo on the day Expedition base set released though…does that count?
I pulled a bunch 25 years ago, but none ever stuck around to adulthood
My brother and i fought over this card endlessly. We were really big fans when we were little and my grandma would buy us cards every time we came to visit. You can see he was loved to death.
Unfortunately i had to let it go to a good home when times got rough a long time ago and ill never forgive myself for that. Ill try to get another similarly damaged one some day.
I don’t remember that much of my childhood, but I do remember pulling a Charizard from a Christmas pack. I remember my mom brought me to some store to buy a few packs that we would put away until Christmas, and I don’t know from where I heard it, but I had some knowledge that “heavier” packs had holos. So I bought a few packs, but only after putting one pack on each forearm and trying to determine which of the packs were heavier In the end, it worked out, as I did pull a holo Charizard!
But I also remember eventually doing the opposite trade @c0ll3ct0r mentioned. I ended up trading it for somewhere between 9-11 holos, I think I needed a few of them to fill out my decks (probably my “Do the Wave” Wigglytuff deck). I was happy with the trade then, so there was nothing to regret.
I pulled the Charizard from my very first pack ever as a kid. Back then I thought 4/102 was the odds of getting that card so I felt pretty good about it until my cousin pulled a Blastoise shortly after.
I don’t know a single person who has pulled a Clefairy as a kid (myself included). I’m probably nuts but even watching box breaks as an adult that card seems to be pulled a lot less than the other holos.
We can be nuts together, I feel exactly the same way and I’ve thought about this many times before. Maybe I saw 3 of them throughout my childhood, I’ve pulled very few of them myself and like you said, they’re usually missing from openings and breaks.
I say this with the most love possible but my first thought when reading this was “spoiled brat” . In all seriousness though that’s awesome and I’m just jealous.
Did we just become internet friends?
I remember trading for one as I had opened a lot of packs with no joy. Then my obsession kicked in and I bought two more packs a day later and pulled one myself.
I never quite got it to work in game for me as my electric/fighting deck was doing me proud
Opened one recently - bit of a deflating experience as the card was a PSA 7 at best.
