Is it ever a good idea to regrade a card?

I was wondering if it was worth cracking open a PSA 9 and sending it in to see if they would grade it at a 10 or does it not change anything in the end?

It’s a possibility but I wouldn’t try it unless you think it could really be gem mint 10. If you see any scratch or speck of edgewear thru the case then it would probably be a waste.

@xuzu has a good opinion on this

If you dont want crack open the card, you can always send it in for review. If PSA grades it higher they will recase it, if it stays the same theyll just send it back.

Reviewing it definitely! I have mixed feelings on cracking one open and sending it back though.

Some cards sit between grades. I have plenty examples of strong 8’s or weak 9’s that are practically the same. This is why the review service exists and why re-grading is an option.

I believe the distinction @xuzu is highlighting, and correct me if I am wrong Ryan, is that it is fine to re-grade if you think a card sits between grades. However, there are individuals who re-grade in hopes psa will miss the damage, and provide them with a falsely inflated grade.

Majority of the time, the designated grade is the highest the card will earn. If you can spot any whitening on your card, or if it is off-centered at all, it will most likely remain a 9. But give the review service a try and see how it goes!

Thanks for your opinions and insight. I wasn’t too sure on what to do. I’ll definitely try reviewing in the future. It seems more truthful for the hobby. I assume regrading a card would also inflate the numbers of a grade artificially as well

If you crack a PSA case, you can send them the label so they can fix the population numbers.

Pretty much. I feel like if you believe PSA made an error in judgement then the review service keeps it honest. Cracking it out and sending it again gives me vibes of deceit, like you’re trying to catch PSA out almost. That’s not to say there aren’t people who think there was an error in judgement but prefer the ‘crack’ route to the review as they believe that PSA might take it personally and be less likely to change a grade with the review service but I have a higher opinion of PSA that they are sufficiently objective enough for me.

There was one yugioh YouTube channel where it was about this guy’s old yugioh collection and how cool it was. He started PSA grading his cards and he was always angry when his cards didn’t get a 10. He’s last PSA related video was him cracking open a bunch of 9s and lower and complaining about how his cards are perfect and how blind PSA are to grade his cards low. I feel that for some people their pride gets in the way of reality. From memory the cards weren’t gem mint worthy, I think i based that off the corners or something.
