Hey Guys - I’ve been doing a bunch of research on Pokemon cards, prices, blah blah blah for the past while and the Pop Series 5 pack has caught my attention. I know you guys in here are the bomb diggity domb for info so I’ve come to you with some questions.
Price:
Looks like the Price is around $30 a pack right now with most selling slightly below that. One eBay listing even has a guy saying he’ll sell for $25 off of eBay. My gut tells me these should be closer to $15-20 but what do I know?
Questions: Is this price going to go up? Does anyone in here have any for sale?
Cards Inside:
Obviously its an extremely small set and there are only 2 cards in the set that people are after: the Gold Star Umbreon and Espeon. With that being said…
Questions: What are the odds of pulling a gold star? Considering the value of these cards - is it worth maybe trying your luck at the packs you buy on eBay or can you scale these packs? (I would think no considering no holo on the gold stars but that ever so slight star logo might offset the pack and this is where I don’t know)
If I want to venture out and grab a couple packs of these I’d like to know some of this first and maybe you guys’ experience with this set.
If you are just looking for Umbreon and Espeon then just buy those two cards up front in my opinion. Sometimes its better to pay the premium than to waste time, effort and money sourcing out the packs and than only getting that bitter bitter disappointment!
I have opened 10 or so of them in the past year or two going after the stars. 0/10 would not recommend. I got them cheap at least but could have made decent money selling them. Couldn’t resist the urge. Have 1 staring me down in my sealed collection probably with a GEM MINT 10 umbreon in it.
The only interest I had in the Pop 5 set was the Mew cards - and tbh the individual cards don’t seem to be going for much these days. I’d just buy them outright.
I opened at least 50 back in the day,possibly more like 70 straight from factory case (no shuffling), only 1 star shiny Espeon and I still seek a star shiny Umbreon.
Just from recent sold listings on eBay and what people are wiling to pay guess. When the hype was at its peak, psa 10 Espeon could fetch around 1.5-2k, and psa 10 umbreon around 1k-1.5k. Now espeon is at around 800-1k and umbreon around 600-700.
(please correct me if my prices are off, these are just rough estimates from what I’ve seen)
I just bought 2 packs for £10 each and pulled nothing. They are like expensive lottery tickets with awful odds to be honest. The pull rate times the pack price is more than one star anyway as there is every chance the card will grade a 9 anyway so it’s definitely worth just buying the cards outright. If you get lucky however you can cash in, someone pulled 2 stars out of 3 packs, their name is numan and they are a member I just couldn’t get the tag to work hence the edit
What were the chances to get the gold stars out of a POP pack, anyway? It was pretty dumb of them to put such desirable cards in more limited and hard to get packs IMO. Should have just put them into Power Keepers with the other three Eeveelutions… then they could have been holos too.
If Espeon/Umbreon were printed as english holos then value/desirability of japanese PLAY versions wouldn’t be nearly high as it’s currently. Totally right decision back then.
Seeing as I’ve opened 500-600 pop 5 packs I agree it’s 1:40. My personal experience is that I almost always pull a gold star after 51-55 packs. Usually i found gold stars near each other packs. Overall I agree the prices have dropped a lot. Part of this is Ludkins collectibles and Renaz flooding the market. I don’t blame ludkins for selling the pop 5 packs but he just liquidated them as fast as possible. I warned Renaz/card house to limit the amount he sokd. Both people could make more money of they slowly sold it. This goes to the things Rudy from Alpha investment talks about. These people dont have the money to make a long term investment. There are other hoards of pokemon collectibles that could rock the hobby. I hope if anyone comes across one they handle it properly.
As for current value and past history. The first PSA 10 espeon sold for about $1700. The next one that sold was for around 3k on ebay. Sadly the seller didn’t properly package the card and it got damaged. Just a plain bubble mailer. The buyer got a refund of $800. At that time it was a pop of 3. I got mine as the fourth. I sold a pair of umbreon and espeon PSA 10 for $2300 direct. After that they have all sold for around $500-800.
exactly. They might make money but I’m the process they ruined cards/collections for others. They also lowered their returns.
Back when I was selling as a job (can’t do 40-60 hours of selling plus full time school and a life. I tried to set up a quota for monthly sales between myself Rusty and Edmelrr. I think it worked a bit for the first few months but they just flooded the market even with 100-120 between all of us. I wanted to have breaks very 4-6 months so the postings would dry up and the demand would increase. We just couldn’t keep up with the wholesale buying.
I’m a little bigger about it because I really like the ex series. It’s just amazing in my opinion and this just helped push the prices down along with the gold star rush.
