Hi guys Iven been wondering about the potential growth this card has due to it being one of the hardest if not the hardest zard to pull and obtain mixed with the unique artwork that iit displays. could this card really fly in years to come? is it likley to rise in the same way as base set zards have risen in the future? I realise its of a newer print than the og wotc cards so with that said could it mean that it still has its time to come or has this boat already sailed? thanks for any insights in adavance
I predict modest growth for this card. Gold stars are absolutely beautiful and strong collectors pieces, but they are set cards and are present in much higher numbers than 1ed base. I highly doubt the rate of growth will be anywhere close to 1ed base.
Forecasting gold star growth is a little hard, with other ex-era stuff you can see the demographic rise and full collector realization isn’t in yet. But gold stars are so popular and hyped that the expected boosts could have been pushed forward or increased by general interest. Just look at the price trends on the GS Zard over the last 2-3 years, we’ve gone from 2k to 6k and back down again, I am not up to date on prices but last I checked it was around 4k.
The long-term question will be if the uniqueness of the gold star cards can set them apart enough from other mass-produced set cards in the way that 1ed base has. It looks like it to me, but 1ed base should also be treated as an outlier and not a predictor.
I like a lot of this. I personally would rush to get these in 9 or 10 cause I think the future is bright. The other gold stars…not so much.
Hi Gary, I’ve heard you express your opinion before on gold stars, and that they are something you view as a fun thing, but not something you’d personally invest in (please correct if this is misquoted). And now I hear you mention again you are clearly not that crazy about them .
I really respect your opinion, and I always enjoy reading when you analyze collectibles. As someone who does collect gold stars, and nearly has a complete set in PSA 9 (with 1 PSA 10), I would be super interested in hearing you explain your stance on gold stars a little more. Would you be willing to further share your stance on gold stars?
Gold stars are great set cards. However I think they will hit a cost of capital situation. When you start getting to mid thousands and flirting with 5 figures, the cost of capital hits a breaking point where you can buy something much rarer for the same cost.
I could not agree more with you, but do you think that this holds true for WOTC holos? Since often they seem to have similar populations for 9 and 10s. Thanks
I think the potential for growth on this card is really good. It is a gold star which will always be a high demand card and it’s a Charizard so it takes it far and above the others. Doesn’t hurt that it’s good looking too
Just because I don’t love their valuation doesn’t affect their importance in the hobby. Actually, I think they are a great collectible. Getting your set in 9s and 10s is an awesome achievement. I wouldn’t invest your retirement money into them.
Just to piggy back of this. If you had to exclusively collect shinings, gold stars or crystals, which would you collect?
Well you can buy most WOTC holo sets for the price of a GS Zard… Even if we compare to similar cards, you can buy both Shining/Crystal Zards PSA 10.
It’s just the price that doesn’t feel right. If I had to pick one Gold Star, I’d definitely choose the Charizard though.
Really love a psa 10 gold star charizard. I have graded many with all coming back 9s and finally got myself a 10. One of my favorite cards. I have a friend selling one I told him to hang on to it as it is such a nice card but unfortunatley has to let it go.
