Quality of this BGS 9 1st ed base zard on auction

UPDATED: added high res pics

Hey all, I was wondering if some could give me some advice on this card I’m thinking of bidding on. The problem I have is that I know BGS can have inconsistency issues below 9s (recently watched Scott’s video comparing PSA and BGS cards). I have no experience with BGS at all and all my cards are PSA graded. So what is people’s opinions of this card? I know it’s hard to tell from the photos (pwcc hasn’t replied to more photos request) but maybe someone who is more familiar with BGS cards is able to inform me further. Mostly I’m a bit worried about the 8.5 subgrade for edges. Could there be a lot of silvering on the front possibly as the back looks fairly solid?

Looks like a solid 9 either BGS or PSA (there are 3 white spots on the edges of the back, top and right side, which probably knocked it down to a 8.5 for edges).

Cheers man :+1:

looks like a good psa 9 or top end psa 8

So are you saying it’s more of a low end psa 9/high end psa 8? How can you tell? If that’s the case it might not be worth a psa 9 price. it just seems to be in better condition than all of the other psa 9s atm on eBay…

Could be a 9 but at least a strong 8. Very nice card:)

Thanks Gary you know I’ve got my eyes open for one of these haha. Surface is a 9.5 so you wouldn’t think there were scratches. Just the edges I would be concerned about as a 8.5. Back does looks pretty devoid of whitening which is what I’m after (they won’t send more photos though)…

Yes I know;)

If centering was the 8.5 I’d be less concerned.

So you would steer clear (if you’re looking for a strong 9)? The photo just doesn’t show anything up. Maybe I’ll try and search up some other bgs cards with an 8.5 edges subgrade

Card looks quite good, but this is pwcc we’re talking about here so it will probably go a bit too high IMO for a card that might be a PSA 8.5.

9.5 surface is great though. I’d be worried about edges as well. It’s really a shame they don’t provide more pictures/angles on high dollar items.

Yeh I know. I understand they couldn’t do it with all of their cards but when you’re spending this much money!

Yeh I’m in a dilemma. To the naked eye the card looks great but that 8.5 subgrade is a worry. If it’s just those little dings around the top right hand side then it should be alright… if that’s all there is.

I do have a BGS 9 card with 8.5 edges and lets just say I’m not too happy with it. My one and only BGS card I ever bought. It didn’t look too bad from the one picture provided.

At the end of the day, you said you’re looking for a strong 9. A strong 9 is BGS 9.5 worthy or close. That doesn’t seem to be this card unfortunately.

Wow that’s a great insight. The edges do look good but like you said you never know until you get it. And just the one photo isn’t helping anyone. My worry is all the base zards go up in price while I’m waiting for a strong 9

Somebody mentioned lack of pictures or poor pics. Plus you mentioned they don’t send extra pics. For those reasons you won’t bid which could make the price go lower costing the real seller money. This is one reason why I have an issue with the consignment company’s policy’s.

You probably don’t want to hear it, but if you want a strong PSA 9 you probably are going to have to pay strong PSA 9 money for a card already in the proper case. Especially with PWCC selling it I don’t see this one being a sneaky buy especially when you advertise it to everyone here on the forum (not that we wouldn’t see it anyways with it being PWCC).

As Gary said typically the savvy BGS buys are ones with the centering subgrade dragging them down as they historically cross best to PSA most often.

Centering is so overrated at BGS. Sometimes they’re off too. You can look at 2 identical cards and 1 has a 9 the other 9.5 or 10 and you can barely tell the difference.

How much do 9s even go for at this point? $4000? I don’t see that card going for less at pwcc.

Alright cool thanks for the insights guys. So if I was looking at a strong psa 9 what would be the price range? I have a WTB thread but I may need to adjust it accordingly.

If anyone is interested in this card I got pwcc to send me high resolution photos front and back.

In relation to the edges, on the front left hand side it looks bumpy all the way down. But they’re not as bad as I thought (to the naked eye) they would be.

Interesting that surface subgrade is 9.5 yet there are clearly scratches on the holo… anyway judge for yourself!
