Sets and Languages: Compilation overview list

Hi all,

Since I ask myself this question many times when I start collecting a new Pokémon, I figured I just make a compilation list for every collector out there whom are after all languages like myself. This thread will only focus on all the sets (so no special releases of individual cards, nor promo cards) including all the languages and variations (1st/UED, Holo/non-Holo/Reverse Holo, copyright dates, EX codes, etc.) that are available consequentially in the set. At the end of each set, I also mention misprinted variants.

Some languages are available for almost every set, like English, Japanese, German, French and Italian. But sometimes some of these languages are skipped for whatever reason (like French Skyridge or Italian Supreme Victors to give two examples). Also, Portuguese and Spanish Reverse Holos weren’t printed for quite a few of the later sets. These kind of anomalies is where this list is all about, to give one source as an overview of all variations regarding languages.

Its been rumored previously, and bulbapedia had a note that there was a russian base set release. How they have it on their site is XY returned to Russia releases and is the latest release since the base set. I don’t know if that confirms there was a base set, as I have never seen anything after lots of research, but nevertheless, it would be awesome if there was.

Russian Base Set cards? I highly doubt that… But I agree that it would be awesome if there were.

Greetz,

That article has been referenced on E4 a couple times, and I have no idea of the accuracy. I know the entire XY series was released, but it would be pretty rad if there was a prototype box art made that had russian writing on it.

I believe the word ‘as’ should have been a ‘but’ in this sentence of that link:

So they were released in English initially, then stopped airing together with the anime.
And then the TCG returned to Russian in October 2014:

But this time with actual Russian cards instead of English cards.

That’s how I understand it. The Pokémon TCG was present in Russia (but printed in English). Then it was banned. And then it returned in 2014, this time with the first actual Russian cards.

Oh I see what you are saying, more than likely, UK released base set boxes were released in Russia at that time, never had a russian translation and then XY had the first Russian translation. Well a russian base set released box would have been cool…

Are there pictures from the Spanish base set that has the 1999-2000 trademark date? I have only seen 1999 dates on all Spanish Base Set cards I encounter, especially the holos.

I don’t have a picture of a holo card, but I do mention it in my Base Pikachu artwork variations article, with these pictures:

If I’m not mistaken, the ©1999 are from Latin America, and the ©1999-2000 from (European) Spain.

Thanks @quuador. I was looking for a 1999-2000 spanish charizard for months but decided to give up on foreign hunting and focus on english instead because of how elusive some cards are *cough*cough*korean ued*cough*. Thanks for the pics

None of the holos in the spanish base set seem to have the 1999-2000 dating, so I came down to the conclusion that the holos don’t exist in 1999-2000 only 1999.

I also sleep better at night believing in this.

You came to this conclusion because you couldn’t find any, or are you sure there aren’t any holos with ©1999-2000?

In this recent thread of mine I listed cards that I’ve never seen myself before, but I think might exist (or I know exist thanks to others - even though I’ve yet to see a single picture as evidence myself). Perhaps the ©1999-2000 holos are one of those illusive cards that do exist, but are extremely hard to find?

Sorry if I give you nightmares by asking.

Haha I am just assuming. There’s plenty of 1999-2000 common and uncommon cards that can be found on ebay but not even a single one of the 16 rare holos can be found. As common as they seem to be the holos are either really good at hiding or they simply don’t exist. Who knows but until I see proof that it exists I won’t dig deeper into the matter. xD

Thanks, @quuador. This is very helpful!

If I may ask, what has been the best source for you for non-English/Japanese cards?

Is it mainly eBay or trading with others in the community?

In additional to things like eBay from various countries, multiple online stores for various countries (like ultrajeux.com, frikea.es, pokemoncardmarket.eu, cardgame-club.it, collect-it.de, lotticards.de), and various countries’ Facebook groups (and the folks that live in said countries).

That’s been basically what has kept me up on Pikachu’s as well. Having contacts in various regions has been an incredible asset that I think would be essential to having a complete database for something like this.

This is pretty awesome! It might be cool to have total numbers available or at least numbers that are known as well to kind of give an idea just how many different possible unique cards there are.

Thanks for that information! Those links are tremendously helpful.

It depends on the language, but here is where I got the largest part of my cards from:

  • English: TrollAndToad.com; eBay.com; PokemonCardMarket.eu
  • Japanese: eBay.com; Noppin.com
  • Dutch: Marktplaats.nl (or I already had them, since I’m Dutch myself)
  • German: PokemonCardMarket.eu; eBay.de
  • French: PokemonCardMarket.eu; eBay.fr
  • Italian: PokemonCardMarket.eu; eBay.it; LPPCollecting.it
  • Spanish: PokemonCardMarket.eu; Frikea.es
  • Portuguese: Amazing Facebook middleman from Brazil
  • Russian: Amazing YouTube middleman from Russia
  • Korean / Chinese / Polish: eBay.com or contacts, although I must admit I have trouble with all three of these languages so far.

And of course I have also found some of these languages elsewhere, like reddit, here on the forum, or the occasional Portuguese, Japanese, or Korean card on PokemonCardMarket, but the links above is where I got the majority of the card in their languages from so far.

Thanks for sharing!

I have had the same experience with Chinese and Polish cards. Slim pickings out there.

kubek and poketrade have been huge helps for me on some of the dutch and polish!

I wanted to let you know that this thread has been super helpful! I’ve bookmarked the link so I can come back when I need reference for my sets! I never knew about the variation in codes for the EX series sets! Those will be fun, yet challenging to track down once I’m to that point in my collection!
