Since the CGC playtest scandal, what does this mean for CGC Cards?

Will CGC be able to come back from this scandal? How will this effect the Graded Market? Are competitors gonna capitalize? Are you ever going to buy CGC graded cards again?

More or less business as usual.

I dont think this changes much for them. The authenticity of their main market (dogshit sub $20 modern bulk) is not really in question

How do you know its the main market? A lot of people still grade valuable cards with it.

Very little change. People who like the clear slab and large label space will continue with what they like. People were skeptical of the all the unofficial cards the past few years anyways. It could drive down their volume a bit. Mostly people that want to grade to sell might not use CGC anymore. Not sure what % of their volume are flippers or collectors

No change for me. I wasn’t going to buy the prototypes because I was personally skeptical, and I don’t have those concerns about the cards I buy.

Also, there were actual criminals at work. I’d like to see what information comes out about all that.

A quick glance at WhatNot/Drip etc will show you that a ton of their market is destined for the cosy inside of a rip off mystery box

Ever since PSA lowered their prices back towards $15 there is only a few reasons to grade with them:

  • you need the cheapest price possible to lower your cost basis
  • you need no upcharges on your very expensive cards
  • you just like the slab more

That middle category may choose to use someone like TAG instead, but realistically the ‘very expensive card’ market is tiny compared to the amount of $3 Japanese AR’s that are being flung through CGC

The other two categories aren’t really affected by this scandal

I’ll continue to use them. I like their slabs more because of the clarity and larger label. And they’re still the only company that slabs a chunk of my collection anyway. I almost always graded for protection rather than the actual grade or authenticity. I know the authenticity myself so very little changes for me.

Just as far as the scandal is concerned I personally feel it depends a lot on what kind of statement or response they put forth. We have not heard from them yet, so, it would be interesting to see how they navigate this major hit to their reputation. Not sure if it may have some wide repercussion to them and the grading scene itself.

However, realistically, it will just be the next big thing or scandal till all these things blow over and it will be like nothing ever happened.

Cheers!

At $9 per card with Fanatics Collect compared to the increased PSA w/ a 20-card minimum, I am willing to grade with them.

Honestly, its kinda silly because this will hurt their reputation and how much did they make on these cards? If there is 1,000 of them at $50 a card, its $50,000. Idk but based on that calculus the measly revenue they received nowhere near offset the risk of getting involved.

Nothing

@Vertemes why does it feel like you are trying to copy me

Wait didn’t you say the opposite? That CGC will take over PSA

No ones wants to copy you. Go away and dont let your FEELINGS get hurt. How’s CYNTHIA btw?

Ooh Vert with that SASS. Yes Kweeen

Also with CGC, yeah just as Thurco, ET and MrB said, it probably won’t affect their main base (and if it does, any effect will probably be short term). The real issue for them lies in the more serious or high end collector base: credibility is just shot. I’ve already railed on enough about how shit CGC’s practices are, but this just seals the deal. (Well in CGC’s case, unseals it LOL).

As much as we love a triple troll post, this isn’t in good taste. The fella might have lost a card he wanted for years

It all depends on their course of action to correct their mistake. PSA is not free from scandals, i.e. their first graded card. However, the difference with CGC was how they started out strong (and loudly) about their expertise and access to the latest technology/techniques to authentic unusual items. They’ve already had a few hiccups, but this is the nail to the coffin (for that reputation), especially with potentially the largest ever scandal being tied to pokemon. This isn’t something you can easily brush away, however if they take measures to mitigate this, I think they will survive.

As long as they don’t change there mind on my funskool after this then I’m happy

I also think CGC will survive the scandal. The issue really only affects a small portion of the hobby and not the average collector.

Fifty fake Moonbreons would have been a much bigger deal.

The market is so large that I am sure this situation will be referenced into eternity while simultaneously people will still use their service.
