Weighed packs are taboo & I get it. If buying them served a good purpose for both parties, what discount would you recommend (percentage)?
Let’s assume a scenario where “Buyer” is trying to complete a full set of reverses & non holos and “Seller” would rather open the good packs & grade cards. All packs are being opened & there’s no risk of them being resold, etc. Everyone is happy.
Pick whatever set you want or a few sets & let me know what discount you think is appropriate here.
Weighing packs is unethical in the sense that a buyer of these weighed packs can turn around and sell them as unweighed or not specify the fact that they are weighed in order to deceive for personal gain.
I see no problem with the sale of weighed packs whereby upon sale there is a guarantee the packs are opened.
In saying that on eBay surprisingly weighed packs can retain 70-80% of potential unweighed packs, especially Base Set where there is greater value placed upon the collection of the pack itself rather than the contents.
One thing I can share. Just because packs are old, or you find some old store stock of base packs doesn’t mean they weren’t weighed. They were weighing like crazy in 1999 so don’t add any value just because they’re old series packs.
This gets into some serious hypotheticals and I don’t like it.
The act of weighing packs itself is unethical, by irreversibly separating holo packs from non-holos you are not only scamming people out of the inherent chance they expect when opening a sealed pack, but you are also saying that doing it is okay in some instances. You yourself may have good intentions, but you can’t assume everyone that obtains those packs will be the same.
You can never guarantee what happens with packs once you weigh them. If I was a scumbag I’d love the opportunity to tell a well-intentioned seller I intended to open non-holo packs and get a discount on them, and then turn around and sell them as unweighed at full price. It’s easy money.
Maybe in some utopia where everyone is ethical and you can guarantee what happens to packs, this would be an ok topic for discussion. But I don’t want this to become a price guide for weighed packs because that will perpetuate the practice and draw attention to “market values” for weighed packs. In effect, this thread (if discussed) would make it easier for weighers to conduct their unscrupulous activity.
