What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

100% agree! It’s so important from a historical perspective. It was the moment Pokemon made the leap into a format that people could enjoy both as collectors and as competitors. One of my best childhood memories is opening some base set products my dad bought me, getting excited about my pulls and then sitting down and playing cards with him. 20 years later, I’m still in love with the game and with collecting. 1996 no rarity base set was where it all started.

What’s the story of no rarity base set? I’ve never paid much attention to it, but it looks interesting. Is there any thread I can read to understand its relevance in the hobby?

This is a great post on no rarity. Basically, the first wave of base set in Japan in 1996 came without rarity symbols because there was no intention to denote rarity, but this decision was changed and later print runs included the rarity symbols we’re used to now. The significance of no rarity base set is that it’s the very first wave of the Pokemon TCG as we know and love it in any language. Despite that, no rarity cards tend to fetch a fraction of the price that English 1st edition cards do.
