They are stylish fakes made to cash in on Pokemons popularity. They are 100% fake and are not authentic or endorsed by Pokemon in any way. I’d love for them to get big enough that Nintendo take notice and send a C&D.
Give it 12 months and the novelty will wear off, competition will be too high so it won’t be worth making it and people will be spending their money on Team Magma vs Team Aqua PSA 9-10 Suicune exs instead.
I’m sure this has been addressed before, but does anyone know if reporting eBay listings for fake/custom/unofficial cards ever actually makes a difference?
I often report them when I see them, but the submission states ‘To protect our users’ privacy, we’re unable to share the action we take.’
Admittedly I don’t go back to check them later, but have people experienced auctions/sellers accounts being closed in response?
I’ve certainly been tempted at some points (cause some of the custom arts, the ones that are really different and don’t want to mirror any real card, are sometimes cool), but in the end it’s a waste of money.
These cards won’t hold value cause they’re not official and in the end, instead of having a cool original Pokemon card, you’ll have something that doesn’t have any value
I think ebay’s report system is all about frequency and volume. I couldn’t comment on the “fake” listing reports. Claiming something is fake requires proof, so I am not entirely sure how they handle those scenarios. Luckily most of the “custom card” listings use the word fake or replica, so it is usually pretty cut and dry.
It should be shut down… but then somebody else will just do it. It’s not like fake pokemon cards isn’t something new. Just the design of these look quite good. blerh… it sucks to see people cashing in on fakes. But i already spoke to the maker… just some lowlife. That’s all anyone who sells fake products will be.
Yeah, these look really cool, the Charizard needs a bit of work. I would PSA 10 a set of those in Japanese and English and I don’t even have any PSA cards if they added the touches to make the other two look as good as the Venusaur.
What should happen is, Pokemon should take him to court, get the rights to his fake work for dropping the charges and release the 3 as UR in an upcoming set. Oh, and what they should do is put all the damaged copies in the Australian boxes as someone there likes it when Gem Mint cards are rare, so they should make it even harder for Gemintong Billabonginton MintIdontwanttoseeyouinathongington to find mint copies.
Really hard for Pokemon/Nintendo to try and stop custom made fake cards like this. What are you going to do get a lawyer/police every time. Sure, it moves off of eBay, then it gets a bigger foothold on the harder to police Social Media. At the price point this moron is selling them at they should be happy, no one is buying them.
The real problem is the Chinese sellers selling so many fake cards.
In my experience eBay is actually good at removing things that get brought up on forums, I guess the volume of complaints and the simple comparison to real products. Oh, yeah, why is this guy selling 20 cards for $1 and everyone else is selling each copy of those cards for $10+.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say that he’s a pest. While I haven’t watched more than a handful of his videos (his exaggerated excitement just doesn’t do it for me) the ones I have seen have all been positive for the hobby in general.
There are a few things he HAS done which I believe have been problematic… of course promoting replica/fake “custom” pokemon cards presents a larger issue.
I suppose it would be unpopular to disagree that these are a real problem for the hobby? Sure they’re unofficial but they don’t resemble any official card that’s ever been produced, they’re unique and not being sold as real cards, so anyone with the ability to read knows in an instant that they’re unofficial… I just see it as buying someones art on the template of a pokemon card. Would it be a problem if someone painted a big squirtle on the face of a card and just tried to sell it as a unique piece of art? If not, then why should it matter whether the medium is paint or a computer? I can sort of understand the concern that for the most part they just modify pre-existing art, however the graphic design aspect of it actually requires a decent amount of talent and they’ve made some pretty striking looking cards. Either way I’m never gonna buy any, I just fail to see a real problem here, would love to hear the other side of the argument though! Just don’t think that the word “Counterfeit” can be applied to these cards because they’re not attempting to perfectly duplicate/recreate any existing cards…
On another note, in the event that Nintendo takes notice of these custom cards and DOES go through with a lawsuit, I think the cards may ironically gain some real value. Rather than mass produced fakes, they will become the infamous “banned” custom cards that were such a prevalent nuisance that Nintendo took notice and put a stop to them. Their production will be illegal/halted and they will actually gain scarcity and notoriety…
They are directly taking money away from the copyright holders and hurting the hobby in doing so. Anyone who buys these would likely be spending less on legitimate products because these illegal products are consuming their finite Pokemon budget for the month. Pokemon is not their intellectual property to modify as they see fit and benefit economically off of. Pokemon is a trademarked and protected brand that only the owners are allowed to sell product so they alone can reap the rewards for generating the IP and also control the image going forward.
Just to get a bit extreme for demonstration… but I am sure someone like this could sell a card with Scyther graphically slicing open other Pokemon full of blood and guts and gore. It reflects poorly on Pokemon and is not the image they want to present and damages their brand. Another issue is that it seems in most cases they are repurposing (stealing) art created by previous artists and giving no credit, nor payment for the work.
Same way you can’t legally buy a Mickey Mouse suit online and host parties as Mickey Mouse because Disney wants to control the people who represent it’s brand. They don’t want random drunks walking around tarnishing the name. They also want to collect royalties and are legally entitled to. Disney would be a lot quicker on the jump to lawyers than Pokemon, but that doesn’t make it okay still.
Its one small step away from counterfeits of actual cards being created, whether this seller himself decides to do it or someone else passes by his auction and catches on, discovering how easy it can be done, first they create a shiny new version then they decide to make a couple copies of the an actual Charizard 1st edition card and mislead buyers into falling for their bs.
Its brings toxicity to the market and it only takes 1 bad apple in this new trend to try something new and then there are more counterfeits of hard to obtain cards on the market… It needs to stop before it gets worse, but it seems its too late, especially when big youtubers get sent freebies and decide promote this crap without thinking things through…
