Which cards or sets did get an initial hype that faded away?

I saw the Thread “Gold stars still hype or meh”. And was thinking about a video I saw yesterday where someone was talking about how hype everyone was about the amazing rare cards and how now nobody cares about it anymore. The same goes for shining fates. Used to be a big hype set and now no one cares anymore.

Which other cards/card types or set met the same fate?

Hyper rare Charizard GX is the biggest in the last 10 years.

Battle Styles. I came out at that perfect point in the pandemic where it was the beginning of not finding product anywhere and since it was a new set, scalpers went brrrr. That caused there to actually be hype behind it cause you couldn’t find anything else in stores anyways.

The majority of modern sets. Champion’s Path, Shining Fates, Vivid Voltage, the list goes on

My vote would be the Amazing Rares! The Shiny sets have held together much better than the Amazing Rares from Vivid Voltage. I remember seeing PSA 10s selling for hundreds of dollars and nowadays they’re around $15-$30. RIP to the few buyers who paid $500+ for their copy of Rayquaza Amazing Rare in early 2021. :headstone:

The Hidden Fates hype was unreal. Can’t get my head around how it’s already almost 4 years ago! Felt like a very exciting time in the TCG, a bit like Evolutions and Pokémon Go. Great for the TCG as it brought in new collectors and enticed old ones back. I know it’s subjective but looking back I feel like it marked the start of a better modern era. IIRC, ETBs went up to about £300 at their peak and came crashing back down after a large reprint in 2021. After a quick eBay check, it looks like they’ve been sat stagnant at around £100 for a while. Even in the shadow of the phenomenal newer releases I think HF is still an S-tier release that will see its day again before long.

McDonalds 25th set…

The problem with Amazing Rares is that they are pretty boring. At least in my opinion. They all pretty much look exactly the same. There is very little creativity there.

RIP to the closets full of sealed McDonalds 25th set cases.

@Cerulean Compared to the art that we have now, I agree. But when they came out, I thought that they were beautiful. Funny how perspectives change when art/design consistently gets better.

Hidden fates gets my vote. It was getting the classic ‘this is the best set of all time’ treatment for a long time. Now, no-one talks about it

Kind of feel like Brilliant Stars was/is overhyped by some. I mean it has the cool Charizard Alt Art card and a couple nice ones in the Trainer Gallery, but outside of that I don’t see the big deal with it compared to something like Evolving Skies or later SWSH sets.

Astral is the superior 2022 set

The vote thing is actually interesting. Maybe a do a poll, which was the most overhyped set at its release.

A lot of the 2020/2021 sets came into my mind when reading the title. The hype was at its peak, product was hard to find and everybody was hyping every new release. Especially Shining Fates and Vivid Voltage. Everybody wanted to have these sets, then they printed them into the ground and nowadays, almost nobody cares about them.

But in general, I got the feeling that a lot of modern sets are getting hyped at their release and nobody talks about them couple of months later. Evolving Skies/Eevee Heroes being the exception to this.

Roaring skies has recovered, but had a big up and downswing a few years back.

What era are you talking about? Just 20/21? Couldn’t find any charts that go back far enough.
