1999 Pokemon Jungle 1st Edition Set SMR

Hey Everyone,

Here is another SMR Article on the 1st Edition Jungle set. The link above is a direct pdf, here is another if that doesn’t work.

Great stuff! It’s really great for the community that SMR has given Pokemon the attention it deserves. Thank you, Scott.

I’ve always loved the artwork in Jungle too. I love the style and vibrant colors… it’s something I always enjoyed looking at a lot more than Fossil (despite my love for the Dragonite). Pretty much every card in Jungle is a beauty.

One thing though - the Kangaskhan has been catching up with some of the other cards in the PSA 10 population report. There are now 36 copies of it, while Clefable / Victreebell / Wigglytuff are sitting at 42 / 41 / 41, respectively. So the fact that Kangaskhan was once way below the pop of the other cards may have been somewhat of a coincidence as opposed to really being much harder to grade than some of the other cards. But for now it still has a price tag that soars above those other cards due to price inertia.

Although… I have noticed a general trend of the normal type Pokemon with very light-colored backgrounds being somewhat harder to grade than other cards (Chansey in base set, Clefable/Kangaskhan/Snorlax/Wigglytuff in Jungle, Persian in Gym Challenge, etc.)

That was a great read, thanks for the link man, definitely a starters guide but nevertheless interesting. Im surprised they didnt divulge into the No Symbol Errors considering lesser known error were discussed in the article, did you bring it up with Kevin ?

I did mention the no symbol cards. However he is told what to write about, and had to keep it focused on the 1st Edition stamp. Ideally I would like to cover everything through the SMR, and am getting closer to achieving that goal.

Great read, I like how you went into detail about the issues like silvering straight out of the back, and the actual current pop for the psa 10’s. I definatly forsee a price boost in these in the near future

For those of you familiar with cracking and grading 1st edition jungle boxes, are there any common problems that drop pack fresh cards down to a 9? E.g., base set can have centering and print line issues fresh out of the box, the new burning shadows has set has been all over the place with factory edge wear, etc.

What do you guys think - better expected value keeping the box sealed or cracking (carefully) and grading? I think the vast majority of posts I’ve seen on this forum believe the sealed product to be better long term than cracking and grading, but it’d be interesting to hear your thoughts on this set specifically

Somewhat recently picked up the 3 eeveelution holos from Jungle, and I’m surprised how much silvering they had for PSA 10s. Not sure how far the price can go for boxes due to how much silvering these packs had; there seems to be a lot of risk actually opening the packs.

silvering is actually an element that PSA is not to harsh about it seems. I have had plenty of neo destiny and goldstar cards come back as 10’s aswell with some silvering. I think, as long as the rest of the factors (centering, surface and edges respecitively) are perfect they’ll alow for quite some silvering.

Maybe because silvering isn’t a thing in baseball cards hehe.
