I’m thinking of soon acquiring a psa 8 1st Ed base Charizard. I know the market is pretty crazy right now but does anyone have an idea for a realistic price on the card? I’m having trouble finding accurate data. I really don’t want to accidentally overpay. It would be a tremendous help to hear some input. Thank you
Well, my 2 cents which are pretty worthless: based on the listings on eBay for 20k, I think you could get something more in the range of 14-17k if you really search. There’s been so much movement recently that not a lot of people are listing 8s, let along 9s.
Most offers for 9s are easily in the 30k atm but no bites. So natural shift could possibly be to the next best thing. GL though!
I’ve been offering an 8.5 and 15k cash for a 9 to no avail. But I’m also a cheapskate.
Those 8.5 sales are insane and the BGS 9 was even crazier but they were very solid. My PSA 8 is leagues above those except I have terrible centering. I can see a lot of people paying up for the fact that bgs does sub grades sadly. People want to know why their card graded high or low. A PSA 8 based off these sales should be 20k but it depends on the select card. Someone not picky about centering would love mine. Clearly the buyers of these 8.5’s had no issue with the edge whitening on the back. That would bother me.
That is true BUT my entire collection is psa, and I have never graded with bgs before. Since I’m not selling atm it would seem unnecessary, but maybe I will try someday. I can see it getting that grade.
Since the start of September, the Ebay sales have put them between $9.3k and about $12.9k. You could use this as a starting point, unless things have changed dramatically in a couple weeks. The very recent BGS 8.5 selling for $20k seems to contradict that range, though, as others have noted. Still, I think asking around $12-13k for one would be reasonable given the latest sale data of the exact card you are looking for (and these sales are still quite new as well).
i’ve been looking at the 8 prices for the last 3 weeks. anything less than 15k was crazy good deal although people haven’t caught on to the fact yet. if bgs 9 can hit almost 30k, you can bet a legit psa 9 with 4xx cert awesome centering and thick stamp will fetch 30-35k if put up for auction. so i would say jump on those clean 8s and 7s pretty soon. good luck hunting!
The most recent 7 sold for $11.5k. Recent 9 offers are 35k+. Sellers have found they can get better prices/buyers can actually find the high grades off eBay in private sales. Unfortunately this leads to less public data and people end up very surprised with tonight’s Charizard sales, when if you’ve been buying/selling outside of eBay they are not particularly surprising or out of line (except the $60k 9 lol).
The market right now is bizarre as you may have acertained. It used to be prices from two months ago were irrelevant. Now prices from two weeks ago are irrelevant.
PSA 7 and 8s are particularly tricky because there is a lot of variance within the grade. When you combine this with buyers looking to maximize grading company arbitrage to a new buyer pool not overly concerned with bgs vs psa then there can be wide fluctuations if someone expects a psa 7 to easily crossover to BGS 8 or not. Keep in mind BGS is not as back logged as PSA. If you can buy a 7, crack it, send to BGS for $125 and get a BGS 8 back within a week, that’s very easy profit (and is happening right now with many people behind the scenes). Same goes for PSA 8 → BGS 8.5
^ yes, less public data for certain. @rainbowneosking,I would suggest thinking about what type of condition you’d be okay with first before thinking about the price. If you’re buying it for yourself, you might not want to pay such a crazy premium right now for an additional 1-2 grades.
It’s better if you think about it in terms of your budget & disposable income, rather than under/overpaying. I’m pretty sure I overpaid for some of my blastoises, but that was with respect to the period of time that I bought them and not now. However, it is more important to just mentally accept that you’re going to spend X amount of money on a card, rather than to pay and have second thoughts. Cheers!
The PWCC sales were definitely a wake up call for me in this regard. Do you have any advice about how to find cards one is after privately or at least stay in touch with the market of private sales? As someone new to the hobby (as an adult) with no connections to the private sale world other than the few I’ve navigated myself, it can be difficult to track down some cards at all if there isn’t an ebay listing, much less know of a reasonable price for certain cards. Apologies for going of on a tangent here. If this should be a separate thread I can definitely move this.
Curious on this myself… I have an 8 (not looking to sell) but have had a hard time trying to assign a value to it. Have there been confirmed private sales above those eBay sold listings? As someone else mentioned - most of those are around the $10k mark.
Definitely wait to see if paid on PWCC site. A buyer won all the high end charizards. Not convinced CG shilled anything especially since he is posting buy prices similar to his supposed shill bids. I pulled all mine OM until things settle down. I am guessing others are also.
