1st ed Base commons and uncommons

You guys think there will be any growth in these in PSA 9 or 10 in the coming year? Seems like most the commons go for around $15 or so for PSA 9 and $30 or so for PSA 10 (I’m talking the non starter commons like Tangela, metapod, kakuna, you know the boring ones ha). Or do you think that is a healthy amount of money for a common card and won’t see much price appreciation. Thanks!

I found a PSA 9 1st Edition Charmander at a hobby store for $33 is that a good price?

I think so def the charmander, pikachu, bulb, squirtle are higher commons but just wondering what the trajectory of these commons/uncommons are since so much focus for 1st ed base seems to be on the holos.

All of 1st edition base has grown and (imo) will continue to grow. Right now there are a lot of folks unloading their nonholos they’ve had stored. PSA 10 commons are down to $30 for some! That’s cheap! If I had extra dough I’d snatch every PSA 10 that hit $30, that’s a temporary valley imo. Once those stores dry up, the price will be bullish again, unless demand declines, but I don’t see that happening. ime demand is still near the beginning of the incline.

Only time will tell.

My opinion is probably biased as I only care for holos, I’m not much of a full set collector. I consider it bulk, but I do see growth on these… I’m just not sure how much. Probably 2-3x increase a few years from now.

I don’t see people dropping hundreds on a PSA 10 Tangela. Maybe $100 best case scenario once there’s literally 0 supply of Mint 1st Ed Base cards left.

It’s probably not a bad investment, but if I have say $10,000 to spend… Do I buy 300 PSA 10 commons that will take months to move or a couple PSA 10 holos that I know will sell like hot cakes?

If anyone wants to sell any C/U psa 10 at $30 I will buy all of them no questions asked.

I’ve noticed that Tangela, Drowzee, Machop, Nidoran and Ponyta generally run the cheapest, but even those hardly ever hit $30. They usually float around $35-40. And Kakuna is an uncommon. It usually it hovers around the range of $65-100. I don’t think I’ve seen it for anything less over the last several months. If a $40 Kakuna ever popped up, I would jump on it in a heartbeat; let alone $30.

I’ve seen PSA 10 commons like those you listed for $30.

Look at sold listings and you’ll find them. @smpratte probably bought all those which is why you don’t see them listed anymore :relieved:

I’ve started picking them up as I see them as a good investment and they are also the first edition base set in PSA 10 so they are awesome to just own. Where exactly are you finding them listed for $30? Apart from a metapod on eBay currently for $33 I can’t see any other listings that close

That’s a good question! My question is, do you think it’s more likely for 1st edition psa 10 holos to triple in price faster than non-holos?

Would you expect 1st edition PSA 10 Blastoise to go from $10k to $30k before a PSA 10 squirtle goes from $100 to $300?

When I ask myself this,I immediately think that holos will inevitably grow faster due to scarcity.

However, I’m also considering that holos may be or are already nearing a horizontal asymptote where non/holos might still have more room to grow before the growth becomes asymptotic.

If we could answer this, then we will know how to spend $10k now.

i personally would rather spend $10,000 on $30 PSA 10 commons than $10,000 on one or two holos!
