Background:
One sold recently on auction for $152 and another is listed for $150 right now. Other PSA 9 rares tend to go for about $50 (dragonair for a bit higher). Beedrill seems to be a bit more scarce, doesn’t pop up as often on ebay. PSA reports a pop of 84 for Beedrill, other rares have at least a pop of 120.
Value:
I understand why the Beedrill went for more (see: scarcity) but I’m wondering if $150 is a bit high. Should I be patient on this one? I feel like the dry spell is temporary and if there is a time where 2 or 3 are listed at the same time, you won’t see it go for as much.
Scarcity:
This question might be more interesting. Why is this card relatively hard to find? Were less copies printed? Or something else??
The situation in which I caution people is when a card has a lower population report at a certain point and the price for the card balloons, but then the population of the card catches up to the other cards in the set while the price retains its premium due to the inertia of the market. In situations like that, I urge people to use caution and wait for a market correction.
In the case of Beedrill, this seems like a card where the population is *significantly* below its counterparts.
Agreed. I remember not long ago a couple members wanted a price for the full non holo PSA 9 set and that beedrill price caught my attention. That pop number makes a lot of sense now.
I don’t think it will get any cheaper. Unless you find a raw copy which some e4 members might hook you up with.
@garyis2000 No way playability has anything to do with it. In the original era of the Pokemon TCG Beedrill was scarcely used, while Electabuzz was one of the most overpowered and overused monsters. I have to assume there’s something about its placement on the printing sheet that caused more defects during manufacturing.
