1st Edition Base Beedrill

Hey guys,

What’s the story behind this card? It’s pricier than all of the other non-holo rares, regardless of grade. I noticed there have been a little over 400 submitted to PSA while the other rares are all around 550ish. Didn’t know if this was a lack of interest or maybe there are less of them out in the wild.

Thanks!

The difference in price is a population report thing (here are the numbers for PSA 10s).

Dragonair - 105
Beedrill - 108
Dugtrio - 133
Electrode - 139
Pidgeotto - 160
Electabuzz - 162

You’re wrong about one thing though - the Dragonair is definitely pricier than the Beedrill, although both are quite pricey.

(As far as why fewer Beedrills were submitted compared to cards like Electrode… I’m really not sure.)

People have speculated that possibly less of them were printed, which could be due to the way they were organized on the sheets. I don’t think anyone can tell you for sure.

Even 3 years ago, it was the last and one of the most expensive PSA 9s I need to complete the set

Yeah, I really don’t see another plausible explanation. It’s not like cards like Electrode and Electabuzz being so much more popular than Beedrill makes any sense. And the discrepancy in the population report (405 for Beedrill vs 525-553 for all of the other non-holo Rare Pokemon) is too great for this to simply be random chance.

I wasn’t saying 10’s in particular. The 10 Dragonair is more expensive but I don’t think the 9 is - compared to the Beedrill.

Ditto. I’m working on completing the set in a 9 - which is why I brought this up. I purchased mine for $175, just seemed high.

Oh yeah, sorry, the difference in pop is even more extreme when looking at PSA 9s. There are only 184 PSA 9 1st edition Beedrills, compared to 268-331 for the other PSA 9 1st edition non-holo Rare Pokemon.

So that’s what accounts for the price difference.

It seems like some version of this topic gets brought up every day - And the answer is always yes, the lower pop set cards are generally going to be much more expensive relative to the other cards in a set.
