Hello everyone!
I am a Pokémon fan and Trading Card Game collector from Italy This is my very first post on the forum so if there is something wrong or missing please let me know.
I am writing here because of the card you can see below.
Its story is quite funny: several years ago i found by chance a guide on the web about Pokémon error cards (at the time i knew nothing about that) and read about this card; the exact next day i went to a fair near here and going trough a seller’s album i couldn’t believe my eyes when i saw this among other 5-6 similar ones!
Paid 5€ for it ahahah
As most of you know that’s the 1st edition non holo version of Dark dragonite 5/82 with offcenter energy cost and, according to the guide i read, it’s ranked at #3 among the rarest errors, after pre release raichu and inverted logo black star promos.
Some months ago i decided to have it graded by PSA and it turned out to be a MINT 9. There are only 6 copies including this at that grade and no 10 exist!
So i would like your opinion about the possibile market value of this graded card, it’s not for sale or trade and it won’t be, but i would like to have a precise as possible idea about one of my collection favourite card.
I am glad to be part of this forum and i am sure i will find lots of interesting information on here
Amazing card. Raw or graded 1st ed. versions don’t appear too often but PSA 10 unlimited Dark Dragonite error usually gains ~$200, your card could be easily at least $300 ( conservative guess ).
Two things first.
There is no such thing as a legit pre raichu. Adding an easy to apply stamp to a cheap raichu doesn’t make it legit.
And, the Square Cut No Stage Blastoise has only 4 known to exist, and only one came direct from WOTC…the BGS 8.5 one.
Now that that is off my chest, your card is awesome. Congrats. I know 10 people right now who would pay 4-500.00.
AND den… out of deh misty shadows of trepedation… The instense Raichu prelease appears, but in NO RARITAN PRERELEASEM STAMPED FORM!! BUT LEGIT! @garyis2000
I fell that actually the square cut takes away from the error due to the legitimacy concerns surrounding them. Im talking about for your average guy browsing eBay there not anyone on this forum who can confirm the legitimacy through knowing of you and your reputation. Are there rough numbers for things like the cigar paper hitmonlee error or things like @darkrai’s albino zapdos error?
I bought this card around a year ago and paid above the $500 figure mentioned throughout this thread. It was a trade, so the true value of the trade is subjective.
A solid comparison of value would be to compare it against other similar error cards. I’ve noticed owners of one error card will always value theirs above other error cards regardless of rarity. There are plenty of WOTC errors with very few copies circulating and zero on eBay many times. It’s tough to confirm production quantities for many of these.
As I think about all the errors, those with true mistakes at the design level (might not be right terminology here). Meaning 80 damage missing from Ninetales, 5 instead of 22 on dark dragonite will price much higher than a cigar Hitmonlee or an OC card which happen at the production level.
Another level of value is derived from those errors corrected the fastest. So, errors with the lowest population (supply) have a much higher price. A great counter-example is Dark Arbok from Team Rocket which had the copyright date as 1999-20000 instead of 1999-2000. This error was never corrected and could arguably have the same design level error as Dark Dragonite. Dark Arbok is one of the lowest priced holos from the Team Rocket set which generally prices lower than most other WOTC sets.
I could continue to ramble, but to answer your question, I’d argue the true value of this card sits around $850-$900 today. With the demand Gary mentioned, it’d likely sell above that price.
Yeah. Could go a touch higher than 500/600.if mint I suppose.
I’d have to push back a little on the comparison to the Cigar Hitmonlee though. I got much higher offers and sold it for way more. I regret selling it honestly and have tried to get it back with no luck
My highest offers were sub $500 for the cigar Hitmonlee. It’s a much cooler error visually.
I’d argue your square cut NS Blastoise has a “design” error & a “production” error which is highly unique. I’m not entirely sure how the “no stage” symbol was left off. It could have been on the production side.
Again, design & production are terms I’ve created to seperate the two processes.
