Gen 2 finally getting some love! Neo Genesis was about where I gave up on Pokemon as a kid. I made it a point to buy a box when my interest was rekindled. Still have it and still love dreaming about the gem Lugia insidešŸ˜‰

Lugia is part dragon and flying?
Lugia is Psychic Type, and was originally meant to be water/flying.
they chose Psychic last minute because they wanted it to represent a typing that was seen as more powerful.

i love the neo sets.
cool Read, well done.

I remember stopping after Neo Genesis. Within the past couple years I have a new found appreciation for how gen 2 integrated with gen 1.

Oh and keep that box sealed. :slightly_smiling_face:

Very informative read. My favorite part about these SMR articles is learning about how certain cards are more difficult to grade than others. It successfully unveils the challenge collectors undertake when pursuing a PSA 10 set.

This has one of the most difficult cards to grade, the 17 Typhlosion. Even typing out that name and number trigger nightmares. The set also had some of the worst holo scratching in the wotc era. However in my experience there was an improvement in whitening from packs.

This may be a Patreon question. Forgive me if it is. What is pack whitening?

The amount of Whitening on cards when directly pulled from a pack. In my experience there was an improvement in this regard compared to earlier sets, but holo lines are rampant.

A lot of opportunity here, in my opinion. Aside from the Big Three and Lugia, this set is still DIRT cheap. Lots of PSA 10 holos still going for under $100.

But it is underrated. Itā€™s the only Cosmos Holofoil artwork of the Base Set Charizard. The set grades pretty tough and has factory nicks right out of the pack. With 19 Holos, youā€™re not not guaranteed a Charizard pull. With booster box prices climbing closer to $1,000 this could be one of the last times itā€™s relatively affordable. It even has the troll card for the unsuspecting DJ. Good luck finding the set!

The set is underrated but majority of the PSA 10 holos are currently $200+ and rising. Only Steelix, Ampharos and Bellossom are below $100. PSA 9s are definitely dirt cheap though.

Togetic frequently sells for under $100, as well.

ā€œLotsā€ was probably the wrong word to use, but any time there are WOTC 1st Edition holos selling for under $100, itā€™s pretty crazy.

And yeah. The 9s are crazy cheap.

I have a sealed 1st box, but cā€™mon Pratte! I gotta open that someday!!! I just hope that Lugia Iā€™m giving you will be 9 or 10!

I will say that at the time when I bought that box it was only 700 bucks, so if it keeps going up it will make me feel a bit more hesitant to openā€¦ BUT I REALLY WANT TO!!!

Very nice article, i have always loved Neo Genesis and Neo sets in general (Neo revelation is my favourite)

Oh boy finally SMR article about my favourite set of all time, in other hand another sad reminder why Iā€™m still having a struggle completing PSA 10 1st ed. set. :sob:

@smpratte @gemmintpokemon

Btw. where did that $4730 price for Typhlosion 17/111 suddently appear? Iā€™d like to hear more via pm if possible.

Itā€™s what Coin guy sold his for. He provided paypal screenshots/data. I asked him and the data was from before our conversation occurred.

That pretty crazy, considering I only paid like $60 for the PSA 9. That population really needs to rise otherwise this card will reach even higher premiums. Especially with this article making people more aware.

This set is so special to me! I was collecting it when it came out but now my friends had left the cards and were focusing only on the gold/silver game.
