Hello again everyone! After dealing with a lot in my life including a move to the great USA (permanently) It’s been a really long time since I’ve been back to Pokemon collecting after being sucked into Magic: The Gathering I decided to poke my head around and boy how have things changed! Prices for what were super cheap cards or items are going at insane prices, and what were uncommon cards are now super rare!
I’m excited to see what good deals I can find on older cards and add to the collection which unfortunately, I had to leave behind… all of it… but I’m planning a trip later this year to bring it here as securely as possible.
So, any crazy things I might have missed? If there’s one thing I know is that the Pokemon TCG hobby is a rollercoaster.
Edit: I also just noticed Photobucket @%@% up my account and my pictures are gone, happy days.
I mean you didn’t even tell us how long you were gone for. I don’t know if your post means you were gone for the last 2 months or 2 years. You could basically write a novel on 2020 alone.
Pokemon card collecting has a few pretty sizably gulfs in terms of which realms of the hobby you can take part in. There are definitely class systems in Pokemon card collecting now. It creates a lot of tension and us vs them mentality and the different classes of collectors are generally motivated by different things, whether this is good or bad is up to the observer.
There are many more people now who use Pokemon cards as a tool purely for monetary gain, or fame and exposure which leads to monetary gain so it can be difficult to see the market as honest supply and demand, hype and social media play a much bigger part in the value of something rather than how rare or nostalgic something is. But this isn’t the single dominating factor, you can still see honest and authentic interest in cards. It’s just very easy to be jaded and cynical(see: me).
His last post prior to the one above was from December 2019, so apparently little over a year.
And that last sentence is so true, haha. 2020 was a crazy year, not just because of Covid, but also in the collector’s markets. It wouldn’t even surprise me if we would see someone publish a book about it later on.
I’ve noticed more and more people are profiting from the game more than enjoying it, it’s unfortunately known shores for me, at Magic the Gathering there’s a ridiculous amount of market manipulation leading to even crap cards being worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, very sad to see Pokemon being sucked into this type of thing, I remember hunting for good or spectacular deals and actually finding them, this damn hobby should be more affordable but I guess it’s gone to the greedy hounds.
Every card you still need is overvalued now and every card you own is undervalued.
If a card has anime tiddies on it you can add a 100x multiplier to its value compared to the other full art cards in the set.
It’s okay to ridicule the noobs that bought into unlimited Base Set in fall '20 at peak bubble prices, but please leave the guys alone that pay >1k for a Evolutions box right now.
-Harry Potter and Fortnite cards are probably the future of TCG collecting.
Pokemon has been mile a minute. Big names like Logan Paul have gotten in the hobby. The pandemic helped prices escalate. New record breaking prices seemingly every month. Everyone loves Trophies and Japanese cards now. Pokemon even releasing English and UK exclusive promos (e.g. Delivery Pikachu and Futsal).
Nothing in Pokemon can compare to the epic crossover that was MTG - Ponies: The Galloping though.
OK so basically anything WotC is valuable now.
In modern there’s only 3 things that matter: waifus, pikachu, and chorizerds.
Evolutions is expensive now (??)
Steam Siege is still hated
To be fair everyone had a chance to buy it directly from Hasbro’s website, it didn’t sell out, in fact it stood there until the end of the event for $50, so I wouldn’t say scalping.
I’ve noticed a lot of old school set prices are ridiculously high, let alone the first base set! Lugia from Neo-Revelations is $200 now, that’s crazy! I got mine along with a bunch of others from a super cool seller who was getting out of Pokemon as a freebie back when it was a $10 card. I also wanted an XY 2016 Charizard holo which I remember being a $8 card… $100! WTF lol
… and of course waifus, Brock’s full art XY is $8,. Misty’s is $20.
