Almost got 'em

A couple years ago, I had the opportunity to buy a psa 10 play promo Umbreon for 10k. I held it in my hands, but had an issue with my account in transferring over the money.

Now I’ve heard that 30k is now a more realistic price.

Also I had a chance to buy 3 wotc 1st Ed boxes for 2500 each the same year…didn’t do it.

Anyone else had one of those “almost got 'em” moments?

Please close this thread. It brought me nothing but pain just thinking about all those times

Lol after I graduated college I hopped on eBay to see what a base Charizard cost and saw 1st eds (can’t remember if minty or not) for $160-$250 and told myself absolutely not lol

I know that feel bro

Years ago I saw a bunch of raw 1st edition ones at a comic book shop for under 100 and I thought 70 was too high for cardboard…

eBay (2016): PSA 10 1st ed Charizard for $4,000

Me (2016): No way I’m spending $4,000 on cardboard lol

Me (2020): Who wants $10,000 for a PSA 9 1st ed Charizard  (no longer a valid offer lol)

Oh for sure. In the small 10 months now that ive been back into collecting theres been loads of things I wish I pushed forward with sooner, but also many things which I was happy to acquire when I did. Typically when you enjoy what youre doing, the good will end up always outweighing the bad so I have no real regrets on any of these missed opportunities as hard as it might be in looking back on it all.

Would have loved a cheaper Neo Gen 1st ed box not long ago, but hey, what can ya do but move onward

Solid Golden Base Pikachu of the 20th anniversary. It was 200,000 JapYen retail. Including shipping, middleman, and import fees it would have been around 2.7k USD.

Well, now they are worth 10-12.5k USD… :slightly_frowning_face:

Although I now wish I had bought it for the 2.7k USD back then, I still think I made the correct decision at that point in time. I had never even spend more than 350 USD on a single card, and I had also just bought my first car for ~4.75k USD. So there was no way I’d spend close to 3k USD on a single card in the same month, even if it’s the Base Pikachu artwork and it’s made of solid gold.

Could have bought Fan Club karp for 200 usd, saw them on ebay all day long but I collected yugioh, then 1500 was the normal price for a PSA 10, didnt buy, then PSA 9 was worth 1500, didnt buy and thought it was stupid. Then I just accepted that the best moment to buy is today. Purchased a PSA 9 for 3000 usd. Now it’s at least 5k

Does my wife not allowing me to buy a IPO at $18 a share, just because I didn’t know anything about the company count?

She later ended up working for subsidiary and getting shares through employee purchase, not as cheap as I wanted to buy.

BTC senior year of college. It was the downslide of the first “bubblé”. Almost threw $50 at it when it was $8 each. It crashed to $2 each shortly thereafter and gave me confirmation that I made the right call.

A couple bubblés later and I bought in at a much higher price so I could gamble on an international sports betting site. Bought in a bit more after I lost most of that after another “bubblé”. I am still riding out the last bubblé about 10x on my initial investment. Maybe will sell after a couple more “bubblés”.

Pokemon related, well I was surfing eBay 4 months ago and didn’t buy literally every single listing on eBay. They have all since doubled or more.

Sold over 1000 BTC after they spiked up to $12, then dropped back down to a few bucks. Thought the flash in the pan was done and they’d never be worth anything again. All mined myself by a couple multi-card desktops in my basement. Think that was back in summer 2011.

Oh what could have been…

Think about what you did NOT get and now think about what you DID get. I bet the stuff you have is still pretty sweet.

I’m lucky that I bought ALOT of extra cards before the price hike. I have 4 1st edition dark charizards that are near mint or better that I grabbed for 50 each. Any card that now costs too much can possibly be offset by my back stock. Just gotta sell it to get the funds! The downside is that I need to wait 6 months once I submit it for grading! lol

And I guarantee the $3 I got per coin back then was blown on some rubbish or item I don’t even own anymore… I’ve just come to accept it was never meant to be, striking it rich through that means.

Yes please. Revive this?

I can tell you for a fact, even with the gift of hindsight, that there’s a 0% chance I would have held BTC to even $50 per coin. No chance. So I totally understand

Absolutely.

Here’s an unpopular opinion, my Pokemon collection’s had a higher rate of return than any of my stock investments (mostly index funds) even though my main goal is filling my storage unit with goodies for the 6 year-old that never got to buy this stuff haha.

I saw BTC rising, but my risk tolerance is too low. Idk for some reason, I think Pokemon is less risky than BTC.
