I was avidly collecting animation art for a while; I still collect, but the market has really dried up over the last year or so. I would love to get something from the Pokemon anime, but prices have skyrocketed over the last few years. Good cels and sketches are hard to come by, and when they do appear, they fetch the big bucks.
Anyways, here’s a few pieces from my collection:
^ Evangelion Unit-01 from Neon Genesis.
^ From the film Angel’s Egg, directed by Mamoru Oshii.
I too collect art from Anime, especially the concept arts and novelty artworks. I have a Evangelion Book called “Die Sterne”. It contains art from the original '96 anime (since it’s one of my all time favorite anime).
I also collect a few film reels from anime. I only have two, since they are very hard to come by. (Got one from Gundam Tunderbolt and Gundam: The Origin)
I’ve collected a few cels as well! I’m an animation major, so I have a huge passion for it. Mostly from western animation. I’m really jealous of that Eva Unit 01 cel! I really want to get some anime cels, especially from Eva since it’s my favorite show.
Lots of He-man stuff. Show was aired well before my time, but I really enjoy it.
Cel of Prince Adam with Xerox background. This image was part of a reused cycle.
Skeletor pencil! Only his head is drawn in. The rest of his body is Xerox. Great showcase of Funimation’s limited animation techniques.
Orco cel and pencil!
He-Man and a bird/dragon creature. Background is Xerox.
And finally, a pose drawing for one of my favorite cartoons of all time, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy!
Posting this makes me want to get more serious about collecting cels again, but between cards, anime figures, and possibly video games now, I don’t know if I can stretch my measly college budget further.
I’ve never seen any original Pokemon art that was used to create the cards - that would be an incredible find! Artworks used in magazine advertisements come up occasionally on yahoo japan and mandarake - as well as art that was used in the creation of the anime - but original trading card art remains elusive. In a way I’m glad these aren’t available, mainly because I know not being able to afford them would crush me inside haha.
I’ve seen this book before - was always tempted to buy it but never made the plunge. Seeing these pics, I think I might have to now. That’s so cool you collect the reels. I know a few others who collect them as well.
Big fan of the He-Man on the Dragon - and the Grim of course! Great stuff! I know what you mean about budgeting. It’s so hard when you have varied interests in collectibles.
If you’re ever interested in purchasing Eva art, yahoo japan and mandarake are excellent resources. You’ll have to use a middleman deputy service to purchase from yahoo japan, but it’s well worth it IMO.
I haven’t really collected much in terms of cels. I think I have a Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer cel somewhere. I do have a bunch of Gabe/ Mike from Penny Arcade’s original artwork and comic sketches. Those are pretty cool and kind of along the same lines.
