Archived FFTCG Topic

I have recently started collecting the Final Fantasy Opus TCG, and I was considering doing just a side collection thread to share my progress in collecting the cards, but I also thought it would be helpful to write a sort of introductory guide on the collecting side of the TCG. This will help me gain a better understanding of it and will also allow me to perhaps introduce and educate others.

There are currently 3 sets released of this TCG, titled: Opus I, Opus II, Opus III. With Opus III being released in July of this year.

The cards are based off of the (18 mainline, and 79 total) video games, and boast a pretty deep coffer of characters and creatures to base their cards off of. The card artwork mixes in-game shots and static character poses/busts/portraits.

Card Rarity
(ascending order)

Common (C)
Rare (R)
Hero (H)
Legend (L)

There is also a Starter (S) rarity which is to denote cards which are obtained through the pre-constructed starter decks.

The Foil card can come in any of the card rarities, including Starter rarity of which the Foil versions are ONLY available in the Booster Packs and cannot be obtained in the Starter Decks

Booster Box Composition/Pull Chances36 Booster packs per box.

I have researched and read a lot of testimonial about what you can expect to pull from a Booster Box and the general consensus is that you will pull a total of 7 Legend cards per Booster Box, with 1 of those being a Foil Legend. However I have seen boxes with ~10 Legends and 2 Foil Legend Cards. So there seems to be some variance in what you will pull.

General Thoughts

I can’t say enough positive things about the card stock and quality of the printing of this TCG, the cards are thick and come out of the pack looking perfect. The backs of the cards are textured and feel like a high quality playing card.

I will continue to update and improve this original post while I share what I collect!

Nice write-up!

In my experience (though it was an Opus I booster box), and from researching on the internet, is that you always pull 7 Non-Foil Legend cards and 36 - 7 = 29 distinct Hero cards in a booster box. Furthermore I had pulled at least three of every Common (so a playset), and at least one of every Rare, with a part of the rares being in there twice, and only in one occasion I had a Rare three times in a booster box.

I did get 4 Foil Legend cards back then as well.

The quality is indeed superb, I cannot really notice any flaws with the cards and they feel “premium”.

4 Foil legends in 1 box?

Yeah, I thought it was listed that it was two on average, but the Foil Cards seem to be the only ones (at least in Opus I, second wave I think) that work with probability instead of fixed amount per booster box.

My first Foil Legend Card, have a bunch more on the way. Trying not to go silly and be a smart purchaser.

That’s cool! I really like their art and Foil and well about everything haha.

Some funny numbers for you: I sold a Squall 1-041L on 12 April for $35, a Rikku 1-089H Foil + Ultimecia 1-152L for $34, a Lightning 1-141L for $38 and a Minwu 1-171H for $25, that might put things in some perspective

Why not get the most expensive card out of the way early?

Wow I loved playing the final fantasy games. I didn’t know there was a card game, but I might try to grade a Foil Tidus. Maybe an Auron to if there is one.

When was the first set, opus I, released?

End of 2016 was Opus I release. Opus IV is coming in October so they might be do a 3 month release schedule. There is a Hero tier rarity Auron card from Opus I, I think.

PSA do not currently grade the FFO cards. There just hasn’t been the demand for it yet, BGS grade them but BGS would grade a snotty tissue you found in a pair of pants you haven’t worn for a year.

But to be fair I have seen a graded FFO card on eBay from BGS and they do look very nice in the case.

I’d be happy to grade these at BGS! Might have to pick up a box of these soon.

I’m still considering grading with BGS, would need an EU middleman though as Ludkins does not do it, but there doesn’t seem to be a market for graded cards yet.

Even though damn I’d like a BGS 10 card, even if not Pokemon :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks! It’s actually not at all imperative for me to dive into grading with these. I’d be just as happy to keep them raw forever.

I highly recommend a foray into FFO.

Interesting, what does it take to get psa to start grading a new tcg?

Update with some new Legend Foils I have acquired over the last week or so.

Even though I haven’t played the games the cards look nice enough to make me want to grab some.

These are so cool. How much are booster boxes? If I wanted to collect which sets should I go for?

Boxes seem to be between 99 and 120 us depending on how much you look around.

There are only 3 sets right now, and the game is so young it’s really impossible to say which sets have long term potential(if any at all) the idea of investing into this and it being the next Pokemon is a bit far-fetched, but I think there is substance and popularity to keep it going.

Based purely off how popular each character/game is I’d say Opus 1 is the set to look into, it has the 2 most popular characters from. the most popular game in it.

I was looking at opus one. I’m more interested in it because I played most of 1-10.

FF7 and 10 have a lot featured in Opus 1, but being the first set it has a bit of a mix when it comes to the Legend cards. Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall, Zidane all I the same set is good. Opus 2 and 3 have their highlights as well, the Rinoa legend card from Opus 2 is really beautiful.

Everything is theoretical and speculation, but I am mainly collecting it for the same reasons others would. Nostalgia and fun.
