Australian Import Charges

Say I want to purchase single or multiple cards worth $1,000-$4000, how do I get a quote on an import charge for the items before I make a bid, and how do I go about paying said import charge?

I just want to have an exact price before I commit, so I can then pay for both the card and import tax immediately, if it’s at all required.

Is this on the PWCC auctions? If it is I’ve bought multiple high end cards from them ($10k+) and never been charged import fees, they send via fedex and declare at a low value (I assume they have some sort of other insurance scheme in place for mailed cards).

Anyway this page will help you and has the calculators: www.border.gov.au/Trav/Impo/Buyi

ebay should automatically do it for you. I’m not sure with other sites.

eBay does if the seller is using the global shipping program, you won’t pay any fees or taxes through that program. If they’re not and do their own shipping (like PWCC) the import tax depends what they declare the package value at on the customs form. Anything over AUD$1k is game for import tax, also note the $1k threshold is inc the shipping cost.

I’ve had to pay over $350-500 AUD for a few grand worth imported into Australia. I can’t recall the exact amount, but i think it was around $400 AUD for $3400 declared into the country.

Best to check the border site, as i can’t remember properly… sorry.

But if somebody knows, maybe link the new pricing for customs tax currently, it would be helpful.

Thanks for the replies. They have this in their description so I was under the impression I had to do something extra.

“International buyers are subject to additional shipping costs based on the item’s value, size, weight, and quantity purchased. Please reach out to PWCC with questions before bidding. Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility. Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding.

I also notice they ship some cards with FedEx and others using USPS

UK Import is 20% VAT, then a specific percent for the type of product sent, plus import charges and handling fees.

Depending on how they mail the cards varies on costs, maybe contact the seller and your local customs office/post office to enquire?

I’m pretty sure Australia is a flat 10%, which sounds in line with the charges @japan-International-Trade had to pay.

Like I said what you pay is based on the declared value of the item on the customs form + the postage cost (see quote below). When I bought a graded black lotus from PWCC the sale price was over AUD$10k but the declared value they put on the parcel was USD$50 so I paid no import tax - they’ve done this multiple times.

I didn’t ask them to put a lower declared value it might just be their practice, I’d be interested to hear if this happened for other Australians buying high value items from them. Anyway, declared value is needed for postal insurance which is why I thought PWCC might have some other insurance policy in place which makes them not worry about postal insurance (my fedex parcel didn’t seem to have insurance from what I could tell). It wouldn’t surprise me if thy did due to the amount of cards and the value of those cards that they handle and constantly have in transit.

The Australian tax is 10%… But you have to pay a third party service for their time I handling the item. Because citizens can’t directly loaded with Customs and Border Force.

To give you an idea, I’ve had two friends import items worth $1,100-$1,400 and both were charged an extra $300. That’s $110-$140 in tax and the rest in fees to the handler.

This is true.Fees on my $1017 import were $93 handling and ~$100 tax.

Sheesh.

Remind me to make sure people mark stuff I buy down.
