Authenticity of the D.efending Beedrill Typo

Hello everyone,

I’m writing this post because I’m very curious about the Beedrill D.efending typo card and I’m hoping that other members of the community can help shed some light on this card.

**What’s the error?**Beedrill’s attack “Poison Sting” has a typo in the description. Instead of saying “If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now Poisoned” it reads “If heads, the D.efending Pokemon is now Poisoned”. This error is clearly not an ink drip because there is space between the ‘D’ and the ‘e’ for the period.

What I know:

  • This card comes from Base Set Unlimited packs, and one person claims that they pulled it from an Overgrowth Theme Deck
  • PSA has graded this card before meaning it is most likely authentic, but PSA doesn’t recognize it as an error variant (probably because of the lack of documentation and certainty surrounding this card)
  • There isn’t any video proof of this card being pulled (at least from what I’ve found, and I’ve gone through dozens of Overgrowth unboxing videos)
  • Someone on tumblr made a post about this card both on tumblr and on Reddit, but both posts lack proof of authenticity.
  • A Yahoo answers post from back in 2011 mentions this card so more than one person has this card in their collection meaning it wasn’t just a one-off error print or a one-off custom card.

The following pictures are proof that PSA has graded this card at least twice:

Questions for the community:

  • Do any of you have this card?

  • Can anyone confirm that this card is legitimate? Hopefully with video proof of the pull

Thanks for reading, and happy collecting!

@tcagaming made an error video that briefly discusses this card.

Neat, thanks! Glad to see that TCA has one. I heard in the Discord that GemMintPokemon has one as well. Makes me feel like it’s more legit ^^

There’s no question that the cards are authentic…

Confirmed. I grabbed the PSA 6 off eBay awhile back. Card is authentic imo. Spacing between the letters would be tough to fake considering the extent someone would need to go to for such a small error. This was a recent discovery, so I was previously unaware of it before 2020

Awesome, glad you think it’s authentic. Hopefully this post can raise some more awareness and we can get some more info from other people who have it!

I was always under the impression that this was a very well known error card but not very popular compared to others, i picked up a few for next to nothing a few years a go on ebay just for fun as they were usually not very hard to come across albeit not listed as the error. It’s been on Bulbapedia for as long as i can remember in the list of error cards,
I’m not sure why someone would question its authenticity but i’m sure if you sit through a few base set unlimited box opening videos you can find one being pulled from a pack.

Here is a Masters Guide for Pokemon WOTC Corrected Errors & Test cards which has it included as well as many others. It’s full of helpful info!

I have a raw copy. Every reasonable test done to it has resulted in me being positive it’s a legitimate card.

How many of them do you have? Would love to get a rough idea of how many there are in the efour community  Hopefully I can find a video of this card being pulled, it would help in my quest to getting this card formally recognized by PSA. Thanks for the error guide link, I forgot to link that in my original post. Unfortunately it doesn’t have a video source or definitive proof either. Maybe it will soon™
