Joined this forums a few months ago and I have never seen it mentioned once. Rarely see it in a youtube video. Is there a reason why everyone ignores this set?
I know it’s not rare at all, and besides the 3 starters, I dont buy any other cards from it.
Just wondering why it gets no love compared to LC.
Guess to me I like it because it was the last set I remember buying at the store as a kid before getting out of the hobby, but more importantly I LOVE the Cosmos holo pattern of it over base set. It’s also fun getting one that has the swirl.
It’s a reprint combo of the first 3 2 sets, base + jungle. It’s cheap. It’s abundant. It contains fewer errors because WOTC had improved their printing process by its release.
It’s just a very unoriginal set with little distinction other than the giant ‘2’ symbol to remind everyone that it’s reprinted.
LC has reverse holos which makes it more interesting.
The cosmic holo is a fair distinction. I think it is a bit undervalued but yeah peoples whistles dont get too wet considering it didnt differentiate enough
I don’t dislike (hate is such a strong word) Base Set 2 at all.
I think this is because when I was a young kid, buying boosters was hard enough and so was trading cards. By time I was able to collect one card of every 150 Pokémon the Base Set 2 was out and it helped me a lot to get the Pokédex complete. Because, face it, some cards in Jungle were hard to get and/or to trade.
I am neutral on the Base Set 2. I like the cards, it’s the old style art work just with the ‘2’ stamp on it. I will take Base 2 over Evolutions any day.
In regards to the Blastoise holo error, I have no idea. It’s one of those things few people would know much about considering Base 2 isn’t that popular as mentioned. Maybe someone else will chime in with more knowledge.
Keep in mind LC didn’t really have much hype behind it until the past couple years. LC and Base 2 were ignored for ages. The Rev holo pattern, which is unique to LC, makes it stand out more than Base 2.
Base 2 doesn’t really have a strong identity for a number of reasons. Obviously it is a reprint/compilation set; a lazy reprint imo. Also, Base Unlimited was printed in such a large quantity, and to this day is affordable. Therefor, Base 2 really doesn’t have much of a role or anything unique outside of the subtle cosmo holo pattern.
I had actually made a thread a little while ago on the investment opportunity base set 2 might bring, and I remember someone mentioning that it was more of a played set rather than a collected set which makes sense because it’s rather tricky to find clean cards a lot of cards on eBay even come right out and say played condition and I’ve definitely seen it more with base set 2 over almost any other set. And exactly what smpratte said basically it’s just not a stand out set. I’m guessing wizards was having a creative block and just decided to fill in the space and call it base set 2 lol
