Base Set 2 vs Legendary Collection

Evening / Morning / Afternoon All,

Can anyone provide an insight as to why there is a rather big cost disparity between the above 2 sets - is this solely down to the fact that it was the first set to feature reverse holos?

Financially, does anyone see any growth potential in either set? Base Set 2 sealed product seems to carry quite a price yet this price isn’t reflected in the sets high graded cards…

From my own exp in the market, legendary collection carries a 50-75% premium on the BS2 card equivalent (Zapdos is a good example).

It would be interesting to hear from those (if there are any!) that collect either set, and why they are drawn to it.

BS2 didn’t offer anything unique except galaxy holo.

LC has more variety of species and reverse holos, which have a unique holo pattern and are difficult to grade. That grading difficulty eats away supply as serious collectors (@gemmintpokemon) continue to buy supply to try to finish the master set.

LC is likely going to continue to outpace BS2

@teraz is spot on in my opinion. Keep in mind though, it seems the BS2 holos are also a tough grade.

LC also offers that sparkly instagram appeal so it works for those people who can’t afford 1st ed base or shadowless and still want to show off some cards.

I agree but let’s not act like BS2 is not tough to grade. It is right up there with the toughtest sets to grade the print lines and edgeware right out of the boxes were garbage.

Base set 2 sucks.

And LC Rocks :sunglasses:

Didn’t mean to imply that BS2 is easy to grade. My point was overall trying to grade every reverse holo in LC would likely be more difficult and require going through more product than BS2 simply because you have a larger quantity of cards to grade (if doing master set).

Base 2 also has the most boring pack art and set name in the TCG history, especially when juxtaposed with Legendary Collection

Also you can get 3 different charizards in Legendary . Holo, Non Holo, and Reverse. Everyone loves that

Base 2 is the 1st Ed of Reprints. LC are the Unlimited Ed Reprints.
Base 2 are older.
Base 2 are under appreciated.
Base 2 are an absolute bear to grade.
Base 2 are more affordable.
Base 2 slight edge in growth potential
So…
I’d say LC (lol)

I get base 2 is not the most sought after set, but I’ve been picking up potential gem mint cards for anywhere from $6-$18 and I’m not complaining. Only two days ago I picked up a absolute gem mint blastoise for $16.

I get it’s not crazy valuable but I will pick up a few every now and then considering they are so cheap and you know when you buy a eBay version of the card what quality and centering you will get, while opening a booster box you could get anything

But LC is basically just Base Set 2 again, but with ugly reverse holos.

Lol, I see what you did there. Aren’t you one of the biggest Base Set 2 collectors on the forum right now?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

No buddies saying that.

I enjoy both sets, and while I can understand the fascination with LC, I really don’t see why the value is so substantially higher than Base 2. Yes, its release marks a milestone in introducing the first (and best imo) reverse foils, and yes, it includes cards from the Team Rocket expansion, but I’m not convinced that these traits make it the markedly better set that prices suggest. Personally, I’ll take the cosmos holofoil of B2 any any over the lighted star pattern of LC foils.

I predict that Base 2 will continue to increase in value, but slowly, and more as a consequence of premium LC/Base cards becoming too pricey for a lot of buyers.
