Base Set 2

Why do you think base set 2 is such an unpopular set? It is regarded as the least popular wotc set.

Is it because it’s a reprint? In the same regard Legendary Collection is also a reprint. You can say LC has the reverse holos but Base set 2 is also the first set to introduce the fireworks holos

When it came out, all those cards were perceived as the lesser substitutious version of the cards kids actually wanted and valued. Maybe you couldn’t get that Base Set Charizard you always wanted and all your friends had, but you could get a knock off “second edition” of that card. This gave them all a bad reputation. You can’t tell everyone that the rarest most special cards all have 1s on them and then sell cards covered in 2s and expect people to embrace them.

Beyond that, the variety of cards is very tame. It’s just Base + Jungle with no variants or surprises. Legendary Collection mixed things up and made it exciting. Base Set 2 was just straight reprints with a badge of shame on them.

Superior foil, though.

Because it’s stupid and has a dumb 2 on it and only losers don’t have the real cards

Lowest amount of cards printed of any wotc set should mean more than it currently does.

Imagine if 1st Base started out the way Korean and Chinese Base did

It just feels like the “middle child” of base sets compared to OG base and LC. Also I’ve never liked how it has no cards from Fossil. I feel like there’s a misconception that it’s a mix of the original 3 sets where it’s actually only a base set + (most of) Jungle reprint. It just doesn’t add anything exciting enough from original base set for me to ever desire it like LC does with the firework reverses.

It was disappointment made flesh. Everything about it was at best a bittersweet experience.

I always thought base set 2 was odd not including Eeveelutions if the point was to reprint base set and jungle for the players and collectors that didn’t get the originals.

I would love a cosmos holo English Flareon

Blatant money grab by WOTC - and they did it again with LC.

Good thing they got removed from Pokemon.

Except LC had the reverse foil and had new cards like the Dark Vaporeon holo.

Base Set 2 and LC are two entirely different animals (and I’m not even really a fan of LC).

I’ve always lacked interest in Base Set 2 because Base Set Unlimited and Jungle always have been available, maybe a day when Base Set/Jungle in any variation aren’t as easy to get marks the day interest in Base Set 2 rises as collectors settle for it?

When I was a kid that’s all I was doing getting Base Set 2, settling for it.

Base Set 2

That’s gonna continue to carry for most people who were there when base, jungle, fossil were on the shelves, at least. I think many people here had the same experience.
Legendary for me, added the novelty of a few holo versions of non-holo cards, and then the OG foil pattern to boot.

For example, Dark Vaporeon, which to this day is the only legendary card, let alone holo, that I really care about.

edit: Apparently, fossil was not in Base 2… I had no idea. bahaha. That’s how little I’ve cared. Just my PoV, but it IS anwering the question.

I’m just going to come out and say it. Can you please come out of your box again on your vids it was the best start of any YouTuber.

Heh. Thanks! Unfortunately, that intro video was lost to a windows update failure combined with a backup utility bug… I did like it A LOT, and was extremely upset over that one, of the dozens of videos I lost. :sob:

I suppose I could pull it from an old uploaded video…

It just worked so good. If you can get it back on or maybe a new slightly updated with an extra twist to it one that would be awesome. (no pressure on your creativity there lol.)

I have a binder that starts with base set and ends with team rocket. The base set 2 portion starts off cool, its really nice to see all the classic arts with a cosmo holo. Then there’s 100 cards that are lesser versions of already easily accessible cards. The set takes up so much space in the binder I’m actually going to remove it because there are so many uninteresting pages.

The lackluster display-ability combined with the negative nostalgia makes Base Set 2 very… eh.

If you’re going to collect it just get the holos and display them together

Reprints make sense if you reprint everything or if you reprint a “best of”. Base Set 2 was the worst of both worlds, reprinting almost everything - and leaving out , of all things, the Eeveelutions (and some other great cards like Jungle Rapidash, which happens to be one of my favourites). It also didn’t add anything new whatsoever. Also, growing up in Europe I remember some speculation if we would even get the Jungle set, since WotC was marketing it as “out of print, replaced by Base Set 2” before it was released in English.

The saving grace is that the odds of pulling a trainer as your rare are lower than in base set (Clefairy Doll and Devolution Spray - two really useless rare cards - thrown out, and a number of rare Pokémon from Jungle included).

I think WotC may have had something in mind like the core sets they release with MtG. Legendary Collection kind of followed in that line, keeping key cards in rotation.

I stuff base 2 cards in my iPhone case for display. Arguably makes sense, arguably an eye sore.

Base Set 2 is purely nostalgic for me. If I didn’t experience it as a child like I did, I probably would never collect it over any of the original Base Set releases before it. The only other thing it has going for it is the cosmos holo patterns with swirls and the fact it is an absolute dog to grade (tons of print lines and factory whitening issues), so it can be difficult to get the holos in PSA 10.
