Beta Magic Starter Opened on Pawn Stars

Not Pokémon but still a really cool piece of magic and wotc history.

Money wise, I would have asked for a bit more than my buy price to at least walk away with something other than, correct me if I’m wrong, a 1 in 9 chance of getting Black Lotus?

Money aside, the suspence got me!

There are a shitton of rares in Beta, so the chance at a Lotus is a lot smaller, more like 1:50!

Much lower than that, you aren’t guaranteed one of the Power 9. 117 rares, you get 2 per box?

Awesome pull to have on camera though, insane.

Even though I am not into magic, it`s so cool to see something like this!

Poor guy selling this haha. Obviously this deal is discussed prior to the cameras rolling but he should have done a little more bargaining

I feel terrible for that guy. Lost 5k, lowballed by CGC and got the moment of regret rubbed in his face by someone who 150,000 is chump change.

Why do these sellers always listen to the “experts” who have Pawn Stars in their pockets? Of course CGC has a vested interest from Chum Lee to give the seller a low appraisal

This is why I would never be able to sell heavy packs.

Crazy these decks are still being opened! Not to pull back the curtain but the deal is made before recording, which is probably obvious. I remember Gary explaining the process when he went on the show.

Regardless its super impressive to pull a power 9 card! A/B has more rares than all of base set!

Where did he get 150k from? Did I misunderstand him, or is he saying Beta Ancestral Recall is 150k?

Edit: People in the comments saying the rares were Alpha? The corners do look rounded, but hard to be sure from the angle.

Matt Quinn, the expert in the video, confirmed somewhere in the comments that the rares were Alpha. The 150k number is still absolute nonsense as far as I know, but big numbers make for good TV I guess

I guess the CGC premium is real!

Yes, those were alpha rares. On occasion, WoTC inserted alpha rares into beta starter decks because they had to get rid of the extras left over, leading to cost savings on print runs. The later beta starter decks only included beta rares.

An alpha ancestral recall is nowhere near $150,000. Maybe if they get a BGS Black Label, but nowhere near that otherwise. They may be saying that the whole starter deck graded may be $150,000 if all of the uncommons and commons hit a 10 grade, but even then I think their valuation is off.

How much is an 8?:eyes:

Can’t wait for the Latin American Spanish dub of this …

Nice pull! I would keep it sealed though, would never have agreed to open it!

And some people say MTG is declining?

Are the deals done before? My understanding was you tell them if you’re actually willing to sell before-hand but the negotiation part is real. In Gary’s case, he went in there not actually going to sell, so any negotiation in his case would be moot and just for show. But if he was, he would’ve said that and then the actual negotiation would take place in the typical way we see.

I’d have to ask Gary again, it was 5 years ago now. But from what I remember there is another store for just recording the show, and you make the decision prior, but can’t remember if one of those is to potentially haggle.

We should ask Charlie instead since he was on more recently!
