BGS 10 vs PSA 10

Hi guys, I’ve been collecting a large amount of modern PSA 10s over the last few years. However seeing the quantity of modern cards being printed today & the lack of rarity & scarcity, I’m thinking about only buying BGS 10s instead of PSA 10s. PSA 10s are so common these days for modern cards there’s nothing really special about them anymore, but BGS 10s are difficult to acquire & scarcer which adds some appeal in my opinion. For future value of BGS 10s or PSA 10s, which would you put your money on?

PSA 10 > BGS 10 in modern except for BL 10.

Most people collect PSA 10 so it will be far easier to sell them to somebody actually collecting them.

I am in your school of thought also. PSA has graded themselves into a corner…

This is definitely not true. I’ve held enough PSA and BGS 10s in my own hands to know.

Black Label is the only way to really add some extra chase to most modern set cards. Otherwise PSA 10 is your best bet in terms of value. Most modern cards I just collect NM/raw or buy a PSA 10 as I usually just want the card and don’t really have intentions to re-sell them.

I think with low pop wotc cards bgs 10 is good. Like first ed charizard. Only three copies of bgs 10 vs 100 something in psa. But that’s another level of card

if you’re collecting for your own enjoyment and don’t care about selling in the future, who cares what anyone here says. collect what brings you joy

if your collection is fluid and at times you sell stuff off, PSA 10 will be easier to sell for a higher price on average than a BGS gold 10 more times than not

If you’re concerned a about rarity and scarcity, I’d recommend buying rare and scarce cards rather than trying to artificially increase the scarcity of extremely abundant cards by choosing a less popular grading option.

BGS 10 are harder to find because no one really uses BGS. By the same logic you’re better off collecting PFM 10s (grading company I just started 12 seconds ago) because it’s even rarer and scarcer than a BGS 10

I agree with this sentiment as well

My collection is all PSA graded cards. If I do get a BGS, I typically crack grade it to cross it. Just anecdotal as well, but I feel that BGS grading is far more inconsistent than PSA. I find myself disagreeing with more Pokemon graded BGS cards

But like pfm said, if your main concern is rarity/scarcity…maybe looking into rarer/scarcer cards could help ease your worry.

But why do people who know what theyre doing generally not grade with BGS? Because they grade harder…

I collect 9s and generally BGS 9s are less expensive which is why I buy them. Lower basis cost, higher likelyhood of appreciation and growth.

Yes. That is absolutely the only possible reason.

Well I’m not saying its the only reason, but I know for a fact its a calculation that a lot of people made over the past few years with their personal collection and vintage cards. They saw a lower bar for a 10 at PSA and CGC and thats perfectly fine.

Theres also other factors that make PSA more appealing. Personally I like the BGS cases and how they make each card feel more like an art piece than a interchangeable commodity the way PSA cases appear to me. On the flip side, I see how people like the more “technological” and “organizational” appearance of PSA cases over BGS. Also the BGS logo is a little…gaudy

Collect what you like, but recognize that the pops of any modern chase card can increase dramatically. If you’re collecting artificial scarcity in modern, it may be a losing battle.

A great example is the BGS Black Label Umbreon VMAX. First copy sold for $12K and then tons more were graded with relative ease. Now there are 112 copies floating around and the price has eroded considerably.

It’s because the EV of grading with PSA is higher than with BGS

The primary issue is that markets are not static. If BGS 10 suddenly became 20x more expensive than a PSA 10, people would react by cross-grading every PSA 10 available until the price falls back down to a reasonable equilibrium

BGS at one point used to be number 2. CGC took it over a long time ago. I look at BGS now more for sports, or people trying to get BL to flip.

I think BGS has quite a niche with modern TCGs. Like One Piece a lot of my friends grade with Beckett…chasing the black labels

To an extent, I think they get some modern Pokemon

I’ve heard though overall BGS graded cards per month is pretty low compared to PSA and CGC.

Agreed. They definitely get “some” absolutely, but nowhere near what CGC gets and then PSA sitting number one.
