Black and white spots on charizard gold star

I didn’t know where else to turn with this, but what are these white and black spots? Is it possible to get rid of them?
Could the black spots be mold? And as for the shape of this card would you say that 235$ is a fair deal or how would you value it? :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks in advance!

Looks more like dirt. I would clean the card carefully with a microfiber (the kind used to clean eye glasses) cloth. Apply a tiny bit of moisture to the cloth. Be careful and practice on something cheaper first

Thanks for the the quick reply! I thought so too, but wasn’t really sure. Would you say 235 is fair for it in this condition? I’ve tried to make sense of it but I can’t for the life of me

I have this issue on an Espeon Prime card, I tried to wipe it off but it seemed pretty ingrained, I personally didn’t store it and the other cards I purchased off the person didn’t have any of the marks so I was under the assumption it was ink. It definitely could be mould though.

EDIT:

Upon further inspection It looks a lot like mould.

That’s unfortunate :frowning: Do you think it’s still salvageable or is it a matter of time when the mold takes over completely?

I personally think that it’s going to be difficult to remove. Yet, some pieces came off with the water and a microfibre cloth but not enough, I’m also not quite sure how mould removal would affect the card, maybe test it on a cheap cards surface to check for damage.

Hard to say. I feel like the ex era cards are more fragile to water damage as well than wotc era cards, but maybe that’s just in my head

ex series ex cards crease on the foil from seemingly nothing and qc really wasn’t great back then so I absolutely wouldn’t be surprised

Exactly!!! I haven’t really seen it be discussed much but that’s my experience as well and that the foils start to sometimes peel off on the sides very easily

All of my childhood ex cards have frontal foil creasing even though I never took them out the binder :slightly_frowning_face:(

I’m not sure about the front white spots but the back black spots can definitely be cleaned somewhat if not mostly. That’ll greatly increase the value of the card if you can get rid of them.

I’ve cleaned alot of cards with these little black spots.
Most of the time they can be removed fairly easy with a tiny tiny amount of soapy water and using a cotton pad to gently rub the surface of the card.
Though like Jon mentioned it’s worth practising on something cheaper before hand.
The card surfaces are pretty resilient to this cleaning but too much water and rubbing is very quickly going to rub the surface away which you want to avoid at all costs.

I use qtips and with some cheaper older very dirty cards I’ve cleaned before, if I clean too hard and too long in one spot I notice the qtip starts looking a little blue from the card ink itself so yea you can definitely start messing up the card. Just dont go too hard and too long in an one spot.

Oh wow it really did the trick, didn’t it? :flushed:

Thats a huge transformation! Wow!

I took the second photo part way through cleaning, the backs completely free of the stains now.
The biggest step is to just go for it and have a go.
I’ve seen so many cards with the same black spots, even on PSA slabbed cards (2-5 typically) yet are otherwise very clean with very little whitening.
It really doesn’t take much to get them looking good and no doubt those graded cards might’ve scored abit higher too.
