Blocking Buyers

After getting stung by a non-paying ebay user last week, I looked up how to change buyer preferences.

It’s hidden in:

My eBay

Account tab

Site preferences

Buyer requirements (click show to reveal a link to a page where you can block buyers, but also a link to a page which shows who has been blocked under your settings)

This was quite interesting for me. Maybe I made my settings too harsh, as it seems I’ve lost out on numerous bids from buyers with an actually decent feedback score. I set it to 2 unpaid items within the last 12 months. I have since adjusted that to 2 unpaid items in the last month.

I also blocked buyers who don’t have PayPal accounts. Not sure how they expect to pay me if they don’t have a PayPal account? Can someone clarify this for me?

Here’s the list of blocked users. I think I was a bit OTT and lost out on some bids due to the item strike rule:

Too many Unpaid Item strikes

Yeah, 2 unpaid in a year is crazy. These are my setting and they are working so far.

Block buyers who:
Have received 3 unpaid item strike(s) within 1 month(s)
Have a primary shipping address in countries that I don’t ship to
Have a feedback score equal to or lower than -1

I have so few unpaid items that I don’t really care. Maybe 1 out of 200 sales or so. I think a lot of unpaid item problems are from sellers who are pushy to be paid so quickly.

I have a few customers who are regulars now and they always pay 3-5 days later. I often get messages while I am at my computer about sold out items from regulars, I have it in stock, just not relisted. I always offer to re-list right away and they can take a week to pay, I am not in a rush and I just got another sale and a regular customer is happy. If I wait for them to get paid maybe they buy something else.

My view is I want to make buying from me as easy and pleasant as possible.

Edit-PayPal thing. Not sure on this. I don’t have it set and don’t have a problem.

I checked my log and I had 2 people from countries I don’t ship to, both Brazil, and a person with too many unpaid item strikes who shows up as an *.

Also, what is this number? 262900086084 I am guessing an item number, just mine are very different. I took it from the end of your list. It looks like you might have a lot of the same people trying to buy something. I noticed a few numbers have a few entries in your log. Is this just one person or are you selling 100’s of units a day on that item?

Too many Unpaid Item strikes

eBay accepts credit cards.

Beat me to it.
I’m getting more and more eBay payments.

I use several block buyer setting also. I think I marked more then 2 unpaid item strikes, no paypal, and now international. After I have gotten burned too often. Most recently, I was trying to help a fellow collector get a Japanese Mcdonalds toy (the toy is only worth about $1). The toy itself was $1. But shipping and fees to the far north of West Europe was going to be about $25. I lost about $50 because the toy went to Denmark, the postal service there sent it to the wrong town, then toy came back to me. The buyer filed a claim. I sent photos of Denmark postal service’s notes and how my senders address was correct, yet they sent to another zipcode. Ebay sided with buyer so I lost the $25 shipping and fees + another $27 for the buyers full refund. So never again will I sell international on ebay. It is sad, but must be done.

You were “helping” somebody get a toy? How’s that?

History would suggest those bids were of the nonpaying variety. ; )

I meant I didn’t want to sell international, because of other previous international ebay issues. Especially for a $1 item. But I did anyways trying to help the collector get the toy they wanted (a $1 toy that I had).
