Board Games Thread

It’s interesting to know that alongside this hobby of collecting cards our members here at the UPCCC don’t stop just at Pokemon Cards. We have threads for movies, cars, other card games, art & more! One thing I find fascinating is how these threads just thrive with conversations that blossom from one post to another.

Here’s my story about this thread and am anxious to see other’s posts about board games.

When I met up with @reinasierpe about a month ago, we spent a few hours literally meandering around Toronto. I, being from a small town, was like a lost traveler and she was my mountain guide. We went to a few card hubs in Toronto, including 401 Games (that place is HUGE!). However, more fascinating than not, after rifling through the e-Series binders and looking at display cases to spot a potential gems, we then turned to look at the store’s other stock… ( Also here’s a hint: usually if a store has “specialties” they generally are up with the times on values :slightly_frowning_face: So no gems were spotted). For those of you not from the area, wow I’m such a local now, not…, 401 Games has all kinds of card stock imaginable from Pokemon to Yu Gi Oh to MTG, etc. However “games” is not limited to just cards. They have a bountiful array of board games, which we seemed to spend most of our time. Between Marie and myself, we spent a good chunk of time talking about games to try out!

I know everyone likes gathering with friends and having a night of fun, so this thread is for all of us to discuss potential games that we like, or perhaps a game we might have seen and want to try (that potentially someone here has played). We could give games reviews? This is all up to you folks and what you wanna do!

Well, my board game core is Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Munchkin. Those three games guarantee my party will be enjoyable no matter what.

I’ve also invested a lot on Heroclix and Dice Masters in the past. Those are my favorite specialty board games that continually develop.

Settlers of Catan is such a hilarious game that ruins friendships. I love asking to trade for something however if they say “nahh” that is the most opportune time to go BAM! MONOPOLY!

Munchkin is a fun game.

i personally love Carcasonne, easily learned and there are a lot of expansions available. Great for playing the first time and enough room to keep playing as a developed player

i also own Maharadja, great game. Like settlers, but with little twists.

risk is great too.

played a bit of “trouble” as a young child, the simple decision making could get out of control pretty quickly. Dont really play much of anything these days though.

@aj1 Risk is also fantastic. I need to purchase that again. Old copy disappeared at some point.

I’ve heard briefly about this game. What can you tell me about it?

Try to get a secondhand old one, it adds nostalgia

Cards Against Humanity and Taboo are my standard go-tos for gatherings cause they have that wide appeal and the learning curve is extremely simple. For my more “gamer” oriented friends, I’ve played Dominion, 7 Wonders, and Munchkin. Android Netrunner I hear is created by the same people who did Magic: The Gathering, so I’d imagine that’d be pretty awesome as well.

I used to love the Mad Magazine board game from the late 1970s or so.
The object was (which shouldn’t surprise anyone): The winner is whoever loses all their money first.

haha sounds like a blast

It is not a board game, but I miss Mail Order Monsters.

I play Clue but over think everything and usually F up one of the 3
I hate Sorry because generally lose after getting a great start.
Risk is fun!
Trouble can be fun but having to get that 6 to get out can turn anyone grey early.
Monopoly is just tedious and reminds me too much of the real world to have any fun. Why would I sell you Mayfair to complete your board walk? or any other color for that matter…
Monopoly Junior is pretty fun though. Faster and more forceful in the way you play.

Always liked Clue.

I played Taboo over my winter break. Essentially you are given a word and a list of words you are not allowed to say. It is frustrating at times, but the more experiences you’ve had with the person, the easier it is to describe things.
