Booster Pack Authentication

I’m working on a great deal for some unlimited Base Set boosters. Could pick them up for $40 each! Of course, I’m as skeptical as the next chap. I’d like to brush up on booster authentication just to be a little more confident I’m not being hosed.
I know packs can be weighed and/or resealed. No clue what a light or heavy pack should approximately weigh. No clue what a fake pack would look like. Those of you with experience in this area please share.

Easiest way is to provide pics of the packs you are proposing to buy. At that price it seems way too good to be true.

Well small issue here if you become aware of weights.

If the pack comes to you heavy you’ll think “Wow it’s not weighed, my lucky day the seller was an honest guy!”

If the pack comes to you light you’ll think “Wow, this seller weighed the pack! SCUM BAG, REFUND!”

Where in reality for all we know, the seller has no idea of weighing or if they did, you’d have no proof. Unless of course you’re buying something like 10 packs and don’t pull a single holo. The best mindset for buying packs is to always assume they’re weighed. Especially if the price is too good to be true.

As far as resealed or fake packs, both are easy to spot. Reseals will most of the time have glue/residue on the edge, and opening a pack clean without any tears is hard and should be easy to spot as well.

Fake packs are super obivous, a simple google images or ebay search should be able to help you identify if the pack looks authentic almost immediately.

Yeah if you’re worried about the weight of a pack at half price that’s just…yeah. Wouldn’t worry about weight.

Update: They have sealed box for $1440 I’m considering buying as well. I think they want to do the transaction through Facebook. Google says I should be able to transfer through Facebook via PayPal. Anybody have any experience with such things?

Huge red flag given the price. You need to have a Paypal invoice typed up that states everything very clearly, including the words “WOTC Factory Sealed” at the end. If they can’t transact through Paypal they are up to no good. Period!

Pictures they sent. The sealed box looks a little rough. As far as I can tell it seems legit.

Hmm yeah that seal is a red flag

Contacted PayPal. Here’s what they had to say about using PayPal through Facebook.

I’m still attempting to make the purchase, but I made it known to the seller we will have to proceed through different means.

Those pictures are the exact same used by a craigslist scammer that my buddy on instagram was going back and forth with. This is a scam, DO NOT PROCEED!

The scammer used a BS excuse to not transact properly. Also uses a 424 area code phone number and the account ShaleaShanklin@my.com
They had listings on craigslist posted in the Montana section among other places.

There’s some great learning material here for everybody. If somebody is trying to manipulate you like this, they are trying to scam you; simple as that.
No decent seller, be it a business or not, is going to blame you/call you paranoid for wanting a 3rd party safety net in place. As a seller, I always be mindful that even a single digit purchase can be a big purchase for somebody.

Also playing dumb about payment methods, telling they are an intermediate for a family member/friend or saying they got other potential buyers waiting can be considered red flags. If you feel like the seller is manipulating you; they are and know full well they’re doing that.

Be prepared to walk away from some great deals when a seller acts this way. You’ll thank yourself later.
