So I’ve very nearly completed the 1997 Bandai Carddass set save for the Special cards and I’m slowly working on the 1998 Sealdass set too.
I think they are absolutely wonderful niche sets and I’m surprised by how few people are aware of their existence, especially with the classic and definitive Sugimori artwork.
On this, even though I’ve been collecting them for quite a while now I still know so little about them, I’m aware there are even more sets out there and I’m struggling to find out more info, so if there is anyone who has the knowledge or links to articles/photo galleries I’d massively appreciate the insight.
You’re right, never heard of Sealdass until now. Super cool cards. I really enjoy the three legendary birds, they used the same artwok as for the infamous TMB Phone Cards (and they are quite a bit cheaper lol).
Hope someone here has the information you’re looking for!
Thanks, I only discovered the sealdass set by happenstance as a really awesome Japanese ebay seller included a few of them(Dragonite line) back when I was still buying the '97 Carddass set, since them I’ve slowly been picking them up on the rare instance in which they do crop up on ebay.
1996 Bandai Carddass sets with the red/green backs.
1997 Bandai Carddass sets featuring the Sugimori artwork where Pokemon act/behave in a more naturalistic way.
1998 Bandai Sealdass sets where the cards are also stickers
1999/2000 seems to be more anime orientated and I’m not massively interested in the majority of those.
I have a few ‘Prism’ cards and finding anything out about these is a nightmare now that Ultra Prism is a thing.
Also there seems to be a 1995 set but I know even less about this than any other.
It just astounds me how some of these were around at Pokemon’s inception and are still so affordable, I understand supply/demand but still!
So I had never heard of the sets you referred to here. So I went to eBay to check them out and MAN! These cards are awesome. The arts on them are so sweet. And they must not have liked dittoncause I saw three different cards where a pokemon was beating on ditto haha. Anyway, I kept seeing 3rd set and 4th set or something along those lines, what does that mean? I’d love to know more about them. Oh and I didn’t see hardly any sealdass stuff just the cardass, which I still have no idea what that means either haha.
To answer some questions that have been posted, sealdass and cardass are terms exclusive to Bandai company to describe cards/stickers respectively aka all carddass are cards, but not all cards are carddass. The series 1-4 describes which box the cards are found in, I might be able to post pictures later, If requested.
As far as sets go I’ve only paid attention to Bandai from 96-98 as beyond that you have so many sets that’s it’s impossible to keep track, I believe another member got most of them, just to add. There’s a ‘98 jumbo sealdass set, as well as a southern island sealdass set. There’s too many ‘98 carddass sets to list, this is where Bandai starts getting crazy in what they produced, but they also have a ‘97 mini card set.
I love the non tcg cards, to me they’re the easiest way to make your collection unique, too many people know the cards they grew up with. When you can show someone something they didn’t even know exist it’s something special.
I’d recommend looking into other non tcg sets as well, pre 2000 sets I know of:
topsun has a blue/green back, and holo sticker ‘95 set and two ‘97 sets with another holo sticker set
Meiji has a massive ‘97 set, a ‘98 and a 16 card ‘99 set
Tommy has a ‘98 scratch off set
Nissui created a ‘98 set
Haha Oh boy every time I write either carddass or sealdass I feel like I’ve made some terrible spelling error and accidentally said something really inappropriate , glad to know I’m not alone !
Oh wow some great insight here, appreciate that immensely.
I’ll definitely need to do some research on that Southern Islands sealdass set as that sounds amazing, I’ve seen a handful of jumbo cards from various sets including a non-holo Pikachu from '97 but I was a bit sceptical if it was even real because I only found one example.
Absolutely agree with you there, while I’m a massive WOTC fanboy I have a profound fondness for non tcg sets that have a heavy emphasis on art and insight into the Pokemon and world itself.
I’ll be researching the Meiji, Tommy and Nissui sets tonight, I need to compile everything in a list in an as straight-forward as possible way because its all so convoluted!
It looks just like the '97 bandai pikachu, but non holo and jumbo. The jumbo sealdass I was reffering to are actually different as I consider the jumbo pika a part of the '97 carddass set. The jumbo pika I believe was used as promo material to advertise the '97 set.
I think I know which one they are talking about, but I only focus on TCG Jumbo Pikachus and not on Bandai or other non-TCG cards, so I most likely don’t have it.
Do you perhaps have a picture of the Bandai Pikachu Jumbos @cullers ? I’ve most likely seen them before, but I’m not 100% which ones you’re referring to.
Here is an image of the card in question, saw it crop up on eBay a few weeks ago but never picked it up because the price was unexpectedly high, its good to know that its legitimate though and a promotional article to boot, definitely something I’ll need to keep on my radar.
Does anyone know if there are any other promotional cards besides this and the two coveted special cards?
