Charles's Collection and BGS Crossover Question

Hello fellow collectors. I’m super excited to start my collection thread off with my newest arrival and final card that I need to complete my 1st Ed. Base set.

All of my other cards in the set are PSA 9s and I do plan to cross this card over to PSA in the coming months. I’ll post more pics of the rest of my set here in the next few days, plus all of the other cards I’ve picked up here and there. For now what do you guys think the crossover grade will be? I’m hoping that it will keep its 9’s grade, I don’t think it will grade a 10. The case is pretty scuffed up, but then again the case is almost 16 years old.

It’s. So. Prettttyyyyy  praying you get a nice grader on a good day and get that 10! For stuff like that do you crack it out and send it raw or do you send it cased and deal with the bias of the different grade on there? The only reason I ask is because of the card itself and the risk of cracking it out, transferring it, and then even scarier… having some mouth breather on the other end pulling that thing back out once he catches a glimpse of its glory.

I plan on using PSAs cross over grading service for this card. I have no experience cracking cards out of their cases and would be super antsy cracking this card as my first one. I dont expect any bias in the grading process mostly because I’m sending it to PSA and am for the most part saying that I trust their grade over BGS’s grade. Fingers crossed that I get a super cool grader that would grade this card a 10, but from my nonexistent grading experience I would only give this card a 9 myself.

Firstly, cracking those can easily and safely be done though I discourage it mightily. If you did, send the cracked case with label back to BGS for a pop update.

Because of a slight change in grading standards at Becketts in February 2003, a pre change card is generally a higher quality for the grade.

Will PSA notify BGS about the pop report reduction as part of their cross over service, or will I have to ask for the label back to send to BGS?

Do you think ill have any problem crossing this card over to PSA as 9?

Id say it all looks good for a psa 9. I have seen alot worse psa 9, but there usually pretty tough on the surface for a psa 9 grade… However, there has been scratched psa 9 1st ed shadowless charizards on the holo quite a fair few times. One in particular that has bad whitening i can think of is @xgav1337x

However this looks quite stunning on the back and centered, and just overall minty. Id say it has a good chance of a PSA 9.

Looks to me as if BGS was quite a bit harsher on there MINT 9 grade back then… Holy hell…

Now that they have 3 grades above the mint 9 probably has something to do with it.

But if they kept it like this I wonder were theyd be today hmms.

The surface grade on this card is more to do to some residue on the card than scratches in the holo. I couldnt get a good picture of the residue its something you can really only see in person. Its almost like someone had put a piece of tape on the top and bottom of the card.

Hopefully they dont give you a stain 9 or something.

Should be okay.

Hopefully they wont.I should have this back by the end off the month, gotta wait on the next paycheck before I send it.

I cant see it, so through the case they could miss it.

However Im not sure what if it will exactly qualify for the stain thing… Ive never had a stain card graded.

Possible. I cant really tell myself if the residue is on the card or just on the sleeve they put the card in.

The ST designation is normally reserved for gum residue on sports cards or tobacco stains from cigarette sports cards (both very common)

Ive been watching this guys channel for a while, he does only sports cards but he’s big into grading and card knowledge about the companies… cool channel…
Anyway here is an experiment he did in which he tries to cross over 5 Beckett cards to PSA…
Here is a video of the cards before he sends them in:

And here is the video of the results as he received the package back from PSA:

If you listen to what he says on both videos, it makes a lot of sense about being unsure if he will get a fair look at the card by PSA due to the fact that the card they are looking at is encased inside of a BGS case… it would be difficult for anyone to be unbiased.

This is just 1 persons opinion on grading so take it with a grain of salt, but he’s pretty knowledgeable if you watch his other videos. He has a few other videos in which he tries to cross over from Beckett to PSA:

Here is another separate video in which he tries to cross over 24 cards to PSA and only 2 of the 24 got slabbed, and he still got charged for 24 grades+:

I KNOW THIS IS SPORTS CARDS BUT I COULD’NT FIND ANY POKEMON VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE, AND ITS VERY INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL FOR WHEN CHOOSING TO DEAL WITH EITHER PSA OR BGS.

I don’t believe the hysteria that PSA or even Beckett would grade a competitors card lower because it is in a competitors slab.

It seems meritless and let’s face it, we’ve seen numerous times that cards just don’t cross over to their desired grade.

PSA can only grade based on what they see.

OZ hit it on the head, these companies couldn’t care less about your cards potential. People like to create reasons for why they didn’t get what they wanted.

Putting a min grade of 10 on the majority of your cards doesn’t really help with crossing things over in my opinion. I personally dont believe the graders would be biased in anyway seeing a BGS case. The problem is that you run into really strict graders vs more relaxed graders, and also catching graders on a bad. You cant predict the human element when sending your cards in for grading and while it probably only affects 1% or less of submissions, its still something that can happen.
