Choosing the Right Grading Company for a Sugimori Card

Hi, can I get your opinion?
Sugimori signed me a card at the worlds 2007 and I have wanted to grade it for years. I recently contacted my local grading company (PCA) but do you think it would be best to have it authenticated by PSA themselves ?

yes PSA

PSA is your best bet for Pokemon autos in 2024. Do not send to any no name company or even the other top 3. CGC are unscrupulous and money hungry and don’t care if they authenticate garbage or dubiously sourced stuff with no provenance and BGS is only best for very high end vintage and sports in my opinion. PSA has more people working autos than either of those companies it seems.

What are your intentions with the card?

PSA is the general go to but if you do not have any plans on selling the card i dont see any harm in going somewhere else.

Welcome! What’s the card look like? (If you care to share)

Very nice cards! As others have said, PSA is the best choice. I wouldn’t even consider any other company at the moment.

Absolutely PSA. They aren’t very good at authenticating signed cards, but no company is at this point. I’d even say that going outside of PSA would lead to more questions about the authenticity of the card than if it was raw.

The most important thing is that the signature is real, as lots of forgeries are popping up, especially for popular signers like Sugimori. Your provenance and backstory will be important for anyone who wants to purchase the card.

I see thank you very much.
In the end I’m glad the local company refused to grade them. I have just filled in a submission form on PSA and will send it as soon as possible!
I’ve got quite a lot of pictures of me at the worlds, I hope they’ll qualify as proofs!

I believe PSA bases their opinion 100% on the merits of the autograph itself and not external proof. That said, your autographs should be fine especially the Sugimori.

The one important choice you have to make is whether to get the numerical grade on the autograph, the card condition, both or neither.

For example, your Sugimori should get a decent Auto grade ~PSA 9, but the Masuda will grade pretty low. For the card condition, if they have a similar back to the cards behind them (ie. below), then you’re probably getting PSA 7 or less on condition and it might suit you better to just get AUTHENTIC instead of a numeric grade

This.

To the OP, if looking to sell, just get PSA with authentic for the grade. That gives you the best resale value. You likely won’t hear any other answer here regardless since the forum’s hatred level for anything non-PSA is pretty high.

Amazing autos btw!

I have an active order at CGC as you are quoting me.

It’s not forum bias, there’s currently no realistic alternative outside of PSA for autographs. Even PSA is far from perfect when it comes to autos - which has been brought up and criticized here multiple times in the past. But they are the most established and recognized player. In the same way, there’s no realistic alternative for error cards outside of CGC. It’s not a reflection of hatred, it’s a reflection of reality. Recommending any other company in this scenario is just bad advice if the goal is to sell.

JSA and beckett have been authenticating autos for 20 years though and definitely wasn’t calling you out for non PSA hatred, just quoting you on the correct answer which was to get it AUTH grade with PSA DNA auto, which I agreed with 100%

I’ve been authenticating cards for 25 years, that doesn’t mean you should be sending your cards to PFM grading

I chose this option : Dual (Auto. Grade Only), I’m not used to grading services in general but I know they have some small scratches on the back so maybe I should just switch to an authentic grade only.

Yes I would edit or update that order before shipping the cards out
