Collecting Sealed EX/GX Boxes

Hello Guys!

I am new on this board and i got a few questions about investments and collecting stuff. I am from Germany and i started a couple of month ago an Instagram account to to some unboxing stuff and a little bit of creative stuff for trading card games. If you want to check it out: Instagram: Cptn_Cutebone. Especially for Pokemon. I thought about collecting sealed EX/GX boxes and i am about to start of with the Red&Blue 20th anniversary collection. I got already the Pikachu EX Box without the figurine. Is it a good idea to collect those and does it make any difference either in english or in german?

Best regards

Welcome  I am by no means an expert or have the knowledge of most people here. However I believe Japense and English versions of the cards are by far the most popular and valuable in most cases.

I dont know much about Foreign European cards and how they hold their values. The newer sets are highly saturated and mass produced, so it may take alot longer for sealed products to have a ROI. There are exceptions such as Japanese exclusive cards and boxes plus some of the English sealed collection boxes(more notably the English Pikachu legendary shine interpretation collection box)I personally have newer sealed items, only popular pokemon collection boxes and tins mainly as I think these will hold or increase in value better over time than random.Though as I said im no expert and have plenty to learn(I started collecting again a few years ago).

The more conservative investments are high graded and desirable WOTC cards, plus older sets boosters, boxes, tins. There are exceptions of course such as the unique japanese Mario and poncho pikachu boxes from xy…really you need to scoure the forum, reseach and engross yourself in the hobby and try get as much information and knowledge as you can.

Are you collecting for fun, nostalgia, purely investment purposes or other?
There are German collectors here who could shed more light on your Local boxes etc but hopefully the above is of some use :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT: I personally am moving more into the older cards, PSA and refining my collection.I started with XY onwards and realized I am better to refine my goals and collections and move back to the nostalgic products from my childhood along with exclusive Japense cards and PSA graded.
To begin with I basically wanted every set from xy to current(excluding reverse holos), after a while I realized this wasnt feasible nor was it economically viable for myself.
I wont ramble on more ha, but really IMO it all depends on your goals and intentions for the hobby.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Thank you geg89 for your message

Well at the moment i just want to have some fun with Pokemon Cards on my Instagram but i am also a passionate collector. Right now i cant afford to get my hands on the old stuff. In my head i thought that those boxes could be a good start. Besides: They look great.

Your welcome  There you go then! If you like the look of them and your enjoy purchasing, displaying and looking at them.

Thats a great start! Buy things you like and enjoy looking at…build your collection from there. As you delve deeper into the hobby you will start to gain knowledge momentum and a feel for what you want out of it. This will help you refine your goals and move forward.

Now its up to the other question about the boxes.

Idk, maybe its just me but I don’t bother to collect the new EX/GX boxes, as I don’t like how its not sealed, rather its “glued” together. Basically with it having no shrink wrap I dont bother.

What do you mean? Because they are not really sealed they have no value?

I don’t know if many of the English ones will hold value from now on with the market saturation, it may take a long time, and have a small increase for most, especially if it’s not an exclusive promo, and/or not having a plastic seal.

Also not sure about value on German product, went to a media markt in Berlin 2 months ago, and they were stocked with legendary dog tins from HGSS, for 20€. That’s a pretty old item to see NO increase in value…

Hmm this doesnt look good. I was very sceptical about collecting german cards. Now i have to reconsider. Unfortunately i pulled yesterday an EVOLUTION Charizard out of a german booster

occasionally german cards are ok for the meme like Ass trainer from PRC

but they definitely hold much less value than english, such a niche market, and its european, you probably aren’t buying at a good price point…

German Pokemon Booster 4,49€ (5,06 Dollar)
German Lycanroc GC Box (where i pulled Charizard) 17,49€ (19,73 Dollar)

I wouldn’t even pay a cent more than $2.50 on English Packs PRC-on ATM

Just out of curiousity…what does PRC mean?

The amount of space they occupy is a huge turn off. You’d be far better off investing that money into chase singles that you can tuck away and pull out and sell in several years. Not to mention how awkward the collection boxes are to ship. The market is a lot more niche too. The more I think about it, the worse that these things seem to be for investments.

If someone quotes this post in 6 years after selling a Dragonite EX box for $150, I’ll eat a full art.

You are just talking about the Boxes, right?

Well after i looked up all the released EX/ GX boxes, i found out that the Sylveon Collection Box ist the rarest one. It went up in value. Significant.

Yeah I am. These boxes really don’t seem to be good investments at all. Of course there are always going to be a few outliers, such as the Sylveon box, but for the most part it seems like an unappealing investment personally. Buying enough of them and storing the sheer mass of the product doesn’t feel like it’d be worth the space. Hell, I remember the promos themselves were going for less than a dollar each at the time. I’d much rather have sunk the capital in to those, as they seem to be going for a couple of bucks now. I’d rather the slightly lower % in profit if it meant the investment was a heap easier to store. But to each their own though. There is a certain magic to sealed product, and if that’s what appeals to you then go for it!

I have invested in a bunch of boxes and have them on the top of my wardrobe in 2 huge boxes ha! some are long term but mainly i bought 2 of each I was getting so i can open one on camera or sell 1 keep 1 for collection  I am picky with the boxes I buy either for future sale or amazing cheap offers  Thats just me.I am ong for psa and older cards now but ill still pick up for the right price or a nice exclusive japanese box/amazing english one

In terms of shipping, these things weigh barely anything, they actually ship for not a bad price as long as you do it correctly.

However, this collection box is in a league of its own compared to the current ex/gx boxes. This thing while it had a XY promo 4 release was all black and white inside. All four packs were BW, promo’s besides Sylveon were BW promos, and it came with 10 promos as well as a figure. Comparable to the GX/EX of today which were far more mass produced then these, while also still being produced if quantity drops, they are a item that is widely volatile and very much a shaky investment for anyone buying in bulk. For instance, there is no way to compete with someone like Rudy that buys these in the hundreds when someone might put away 24 for an investment, its just way to risky in my opinion.

The investment market today is no where the same market that it was even 3-4 years ago. However collection wise, I think it would be a pretty sweet thing to have one of everything in the ex/gx boxes all lined up on a shelf. They look awesome, but are in no way an investment IMO.

I think the big decider is if you are getting these boxes at distributor pricing, msrp, or somewhere between. At distributor pricing I agree with Alpha investments that these were/are worth getting. At MSRP though don’t get these. Somewhere in between… could be worthwhile long term but that’s resources not invested elsewhere.

So for now collecting sealed boxes should be only for fun and looks. I dont mind it
What are the chances that smpratte can do a video about it?
