Lately, I’ve been thinking about these releases slot lately. In many ways they are similar releases, however the circumstances surrounding their release are worth comparing and contrasting. It may be a great example of how cards are not exclusively based on artwork.
The Pokémon themselves: both have a pikachu; which is most important. Naturally, scream promos have an advantage as the set has 3 more cards. Eevee psd U.K. and the surprise gengar/haunted cameo are hard to beat. Cramorant is a perfect choice as the geese.
Artwork: this the most up for debate. I really don’t think I can give an honest answer. They’re both A+ artwork. They do an amazing job of blending the old and new.
release: the scream cards each had slightly different release, but all were to commemorate the munch scream painting in Tokyo, something outside of Pokémons control. Also, it was Halloween time. It was very much a celebration of a moment in time. Stamp promos do celebrate vintage artwork, but not with any particular reason for the timing. They could’ve released them this year and it would’ve been just as fine. One could says the stamp promos are unique as a 25th anniversary product. Fair point.
quantity: the 5 card set of the scream promos are very good. Each Pokémon has different personality with their fear. Psyduck is terrified, pikachu is gasped, eevee is concerned. They all have a different “feel” of the same emotion. Plus, different illustrators give 5 interpretations of the OG painting. The stamp promos come with 2, and both cards are great, nut a 5 card set could’ve made it stronger.
packaging: the scream promos basically had no packaging, so this is an n/a. However the stamp promos packaging is a huge missed opportunity. Look at the Pokémon center eevee heroes box, and compare that to the stamp box. The stamp box itself is frankly, generic. It could’ve been so much more.
the original artwork: this is juicy. The scream promos are based an artwork recognized internationally. Dare I say the stamp promos artwork is well known. As a occidental person, this adds a cool layer to the cards. However, this could easily be flipped as the scream are iconic.
I think it’s an important discussion because it gets at the core of what matters in a promo or general tag release. What do you think?
