No “Topps Now” card had ever sold over 20k. The Fauci card sold over 50k. Looks like they’ve been selling for up to $30 on ebay. Lots of bored people at home with nothing better to do.
That says something about the future demand if that many copies were sold in that 24 hour window. I can see it being sought after by people outside of sports as a lot of people hold him in high regard and it’d be a memorable piece of this historic period. Not really anything else you can collect to signify coronavirus except a newspaper. Prices were at $30, they’re going for $150+ now and climbing.
Thinking about it, this epidemic is actually a great opportunity for collectibles.
Imagine a set of promo cards with Ash, Brock & Misty or the three Kanto starters all wearing a mask or so.
Not only would they send a positive message, but they’d also be great collectibles with a strong reference to these unprecedented events.
Don’t really expect it to happen though. TPC seems to be very cautious of incorporting real social or political motives into the Pokemon world. Most times that’s for the better, but here a little fourth wall break would go a long way IMO.
The Topps Dr. Fauci has been selling for $100 to $200. I don’t think future sales will hold, but i could be completely wrong. 50,000 + copies is an insane amount for Topps Now, but maybe it will be seen as historically significant.
Depends what it is. I am always wary of something either A) solely created to be a sold as a scarce collectible, such as limited print run modern coins or stamps, or B) too widely considered to be an effortless collection item that will experience organic growth
This doesn’t have coronavirus in the name, but this merch is all from the first Pokemon event to get cancelled due to covid (Toronto Regionals, though surprisingly an Oceania event still occurred after). It was supposed to be my first regional after getting back into Pokemon since 2013, and as luck would have it there’s a global pandemic lol.
I was fortunate to still be able to grab the swag. I really like the coin in particular. I think it’s a pretty neat memory/keepsake to hold onto, in spite of everything.
