I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Beckett and I’ve gone through some of my slabs tonight and I couldn’t help but notice how amazing this card would look in a BGS case(It’s also one of my fav cards of all time). I want some opinions if it’s worth even cracking and subbing to BGS. It’s not a valuable card by any means but it’s a childhood fav and a card I’d probably not get rid of anytime soon. What do you think it’ll grade with BGS(sub grades included)? I can only see the centering as the problem. (It’s a PSA 9 1st ed Ampharos)
Looks clean. Certainly has a shot at a 9.5 if surface has no major scratching or print lines.
This seems like just a preference thing. i don’t see the appeal of the BGS case generally and I especially don’t see why this card in particular would look better with BGS. For me, it’s the same card regardless of the label so I wouldn’t have a desire to cross it personally.
But if it’s something you want to do then it’s pretty harmless. The front centering is a bit off and on a card like this there will almost always be holo scratches so I would expect BGS 9-9.5
@pfm Main reason is for uniform with my other favorite cards. This and kingdra from neo genesis was the first holos I pulled as a kid when this set came out in 2000. They mean a lot to me for a few reasons. To me it would look cleaner in a BGS slab. I’m just more cautious of it grading a 8/8.5 with Beckett.
@charizardespana I can’t find any scratches, even under bright light and different angles. If there is scratches I can’t seem them or find them.
What specifically makes you worried it would downgrade?
Personally the bottom edge/corners would make me cautious of cracking and sending to BGS. While there’s no whitening, the bottom left corner/edge looks strangely cut/shaped in the picture (front)
BGS has screwed me so many times. I wouldn’t be surprised if the centering got a 8 or something. I’ve sent them pack fresh cards before that graded a 9.5 (9.5,9.5,10,10) and cracked and resubmitted and got downgraded to 9. I usually only sub my Pikachus to them bc I like how they look in the case.
Yeah I’ve noticed it to. I’ve had it under a magnifying glass and bright light to see if it looks tampered but it seems to be the way it was cut in the factory. It’s also off centered so my guess it was just cut screwed up. Idk how bad the centering would grade seeing everything else looks fine to me. I have cards with centering the same as this and got a 9 sub grade but I’ve also graded a card with better centering and it got a 8.5 so could just depend what grader is looking at it. I’m hesitant about sending in my charizard I just picked up bc of a white mark on the edge. A guy I’m doing a trade with wants the big 3 from base set and would rather them graded which is the only reason why I’d grade it. I’m pretty decent at pregrading my cards but every once in a while it seems BGS just picks sub grades out a hat and applies it to the card
So why risk it? It will lower in value in a bgs slab and then with a chance at a downgrade too?
I don’t really care about the value. I don’t collect to make a profit or to sell. I collect bc I like my collection and the cards. It would just be a bummer if the overall grade came back a 8.5
I’d probably identify this as a QC error unless it’s obvious dirt/damage… is this like an obstruction on the holo layer?
Are you saying mine has that? I don’t understand what the picture is in correlation to.
It’s just some standard deoxys crap print quality. Subgrades are a not valid way to condition a card. Overall grades barely are
Just saying subs mean nothing lol
Oh yeah i know haha. With BGS for sure. They actually play a game where they blindfold themselves and pick the sub grades out a hat. At least that’s my experience with how I’ve been screwed by them before.
Also on your gold star it looks like there a few small fibers or something on the card. Probably got there during encapsulation, unless it’s scratches
deoxys holos and reverses often have “fuzzy” edges like that. But yeah ive had plenty of boogers in my bgs slabs
Grades don’t necessarily apply to print quality in that sense though was what my point was going to be. Differing companies would grade that card much differently. OP’s card is likely prone to common print lines. The one you posted is a lot rarer to see and I’d go out on a limb to say is an obstruction error or low ink
So I don’t really get this thread? Just cross it with minimum grade and see what happens if you really prefer BGS. If it comes back still in psa slab then nothing lost but a few weeks of time.
The point of the thread was to get people’s opinions. Being someone who can be indecisive when it comes to my collection I was merely looking for others take on it. Plus deciding yes or no saves money and some time. It’s not a valuable card to others in terms of dollars so maybe that’s why some might say “do what you want who cares”. I have a friend who has a complete base set 1st ed holo set with grades 9-10 and his most valuable card is a shadowless nidoran that’s beat to shit. I’d just rather one of my fav cards that means a lot to me to not basically get downgraded or screwed by BGS. It has nothing to do with the value of the card as I don’t look at Pokemon cards as dollar signs. That’s what my bank account, savings, credit cards, CD, stocks, and investments and assets are for.
