Damaging your cards stories

Just received a beautiful Japanese e-Series Tentacruel holo - I swear you couldn’t find a blemish on it with a microscope!

But it was in a super tight semi-rigid plastic sleeve and genius over here was impatient and tried to pull it out with my thumb and index finger… leaving an ever slight indent on the back at the top from my nail…

To make me feel better please share your stories of doing something stupid that damaged a card(s) you own!

When I was a kid, my friends and I used to carry our cards in our pockets quiet often. I would keep my holos in the center of my pile and we would wrap them around with an elastic band. This was when Pokemon was first starting, mind you, and we had no idea about binders or sleeves at the time (I was in 5th grade when it started). So you can imagine the wear and tear on some of those cards.

I remember one kid we knew used to keep his holos in small plastic baggies and would pile them into the pages of a dictionary. Kid was ahead of the game. XD

Back in the late 1990’s my dad had a couple of things being sent to be laminated, being the “genius” I was I thought of sending my best cards (holos) to be laminated as that would surely preserve them better! Long story short I was an idiot, don’t worry though, they were not super expensive even to this day, so I just bought more back in the early 2010’s when they were still cheap, however there’s one card in particular which I deeply regret sending it over and it’s an “error” Holo English Haunted with a giant ink smudge in the holo portion, it was from a booster pack my grandfather had bought for me back in the day.

I once dropped a Skyridge Charizard Holo when transferring it from it’s old sleeve into a new sleeve so I cpuld send it to PSA. It slid across my computer desk under my keyboard and it made a fairly big scratch/gouge in the holo. Sent it to PSA and it got 6’d. I ended up busting it out and selling it raw to a guy who just wanted a binder collection, even made 5 dollars profit.

I’d say RIP 19k but I’d had sold it straight away if it had gotten a 10 because I already had one, and because I am an impatient goon.

I damaged my first ever holo (Ninetales Base from a Brushfire theme deck) by allowing it to leave my sight. My then-four-year-old sister found the shiny cardboard and maniacally chewed and bit the card into a PSA negative seven grade. I remember discovering the remains and sobbing uncontrollably while being consoled by my mother.

I accidentally shattered a CGC slab of a Lapras EX, and it left a huge scratch/dent on the back of the card ):

Took a Dark Tyranitar I pulled myself out of its sleeve about 2 years after opening it to inspect condition, it was covered in coffee. No idea what happened.

Went to target with my mom and brother. We each got an EX FRLG pack, we get home and open them. He gets nothing and I get an articuno EX. He immediately takes it from me and bends it in half in rage. Still havent fully forgiven him for it.

I was leaning in to take a photo of my mint condition Base Charizard, my shoulder knocked an object onto the card and dented it. I gave it to a relative.

I reorganized my collection as a child on almost a weekly basis. So to say they’re in played quality by now is an understatement.

One non-Pokémon card that I damaged more recently was a stainless steel Yu-Gi-Oh Dark Magician promo I ordered near the start of last year or maybe end of 2019. Arrived well-packaged and in NM quality, along with some other packages. After I opened all the packages I accidently caught the sleeve of my shirt on the cards and most of them fell on the ground. The cards were still in sleeves, so those were fine. The metal Yu-Gi-Oh card on the other hand landed exactly on one of the corners, leaving a pretty big folded crease. :sob: I had to use pliers to somewhat bend it back (otherwise I couldn’t even have put it in my binder… ), but you can still clearly see it.

I stepped on my NM reverse holo legend maker Kabutops

I’d finally, after over half a year, located a pristine reverse foil Arcanine from Ex Sandstorm—one of my favorite all time arts. There was not a blemish on the foil and the back has no whitening of any kind. Got it for a great price, too. The seller shipped it in a toploader and taped up the envelope really well. I could feel there was about an inch of area between the toploader and the edge of the envelope. I cut the envelope above the toploader edge and just under the edge of the envelope and…right through the top of the card which has slid out of the toploader during shipping. I felt just sick—especially after inspecting the otherwise perfect condition of this two piece card.

Always use a strip of painters tape to keep the card from slipping out of the toploader…

And for my Gengar ex holo that went from a very hard to find loose PSA 10 candidate to a PSA 2 sob story–put the toploaders between cardboard, too. The USPS has proven they can BEND the toploader and crease your card beyond repair when those animals are handling envelopes. Otherwise I would never have known this could even really be a thing. Of course, since cardboard can be bent, too, just skip the PWE altogether and use a Manila if you can’t be bothered to use a small box.

I’m still trying to find affordable replacements for those two cards.

Was getting ready to ship out a NM Giovanni’s Persian. I put the card aside and got some packaging stuff and then sat down and wondered where I’d put the card. Then I realized I had sat on the card (on a cushioned seat), so I ended up creasing it.

Also tried flattening out a warped card under a book, only to realize some time later that I hadn’t cleaned off the underside of the book well enough, so I left a nice indent on the card where there was a piece of debris stuck.

Even this is far from ideal. What I wished anyone would do if they don’t have team bags would be to take a piece or two of paper and fold it over the top, taping both edges of it to the toploader.

I purchased a hitmonchan best of winner promo,. I was tidying my desk and room and picked up a piece of generic brown cardboard, I folded it in half to put in the bin and when I turned it over it had the card on it :slightly_frowning_face: RIP! I was going to throw it away but my brother took it and popped it in his binder instead.
