Ok so I’ve had 2 question for a while, and I couldn’t find a topic that was similar to it. But first, like the title says, did PSA get certs wrong for these? Below are 3 examples:
I highlighted some of the differences between the 2 cards. Other subtle differences are on the 2006 dated card it has 5 lines of text and on the 2005 it has 4. The number fonts in the text/description are also different. Now at the top of the certs the first 2 say “2005”. The third one says “2006” which I assume would be the correct description.
This brings me to my second question. How much does this skew the pop report on these cards? I’ve seen more than a few 2006 dated victory medal silvers with a cert that says 2005 (also not to be confused with the stamped versions). Are the 2005 silvers actually more rare because of this?
Hello @xurgg warm welcome to the forums, super lovely to have you in here. Very interesting questions which I hope can be clarified or atleast provide a good discussion.
I can try to address the first question in detail and to be fair, the way these victory medals were awarded and the copyright date does make it confusing.
This one above is labelled correctly. It was awarded to gym challenge store winners in 2005. It has no promo symbol and has a copyright date of 2005.
This one above is labelled incorrectly. This was handed out to gym challenge store winners in 2007. Silver victory medals handed out in 2007 have the promo symbol but have the copyright date of 2006.
The ones handed out as prizes in 2006 have the embossed golden stamp which indicates they are from 2006, however they have the copyright date of 2005.
This one above is also labelled incorrectly, as this should have been 2007 gym challenge.
Added a table to summarize:
Victory Medal
Handed out
Copyright date
How to identify
2005
Gym store event winners in 2005
2005
No promo star symbol on right bottom corner
2006
Gym store event winners in 2006
2005
“Gym Challenge 2006” embossed in gold on the card
2007
Gym store event winners in 2007
2006
Promo star symbol on right bottom corner
They all have very prominent distinguishing marks but considering all of these confusions with copyright dates, it can be safe to assume that the pop reports may have inconsistencies.
In my personal opinion, 2005 silver medals (no promo mark) should be the rarest of the silver medals, relative to others. I am unsure of the total population since that will be impossible to determine. I am just basing this on feeling and what I have observed in the market. However PSA pop reports do indicate the same way since the 2005 Victory medal (no mark) is the one you can always get correct since if you base the decision on copyright then PSA still does it correctly.
Thank you @quuador . Very honored to get the cube token.
The cards themselves have clear indicating marks, but the copyright dates are really messed up. So I can imagine someone not deep into the hobby especially at grading companies easily making this error.
Excellent rundown @mrbubbles ! This has confused me in the past as well. That confusion might decrease interest, but I think they are great cards. Glad you cleared that up.
Also, Welcome, @xurgg ! Great first post/question and Great cards! even if PSA flubbed the labels. I hope you have a wonderful and enlightening time here on the Elite Fourum.
Wow, thank you for this explanation. It definitely clarified my confusion/questions! It looks like I acquired the correct one when I was deciding which to get (2005, no stamp). Also, thank you for the welcome.
