Difficult to grade WOTC Cards

Hey guys.

I thought it would be interesting to discuss some WOTC cards that are notoriously hard to grade in PSA 10.

I have some experiences with the below cards in particular and would like to hear some cards you have all found hard to grade also.

Giovanni’s Persian- Gym Challenge
Misty’s Goldduck - Gym Challenge
Blaine’s Moltres - Gym Heroes
Dark Magneton - Team Rocket

The above cards are incredibly hard to find in mint condition and the holos almost always seem to have issues! What do you all think?

Alakazam, Charizard, Hitmonchan from Base Set because they were on the left(closest to the rings) in binder sets.

Great point. Plus they were almost always page 1.

Most Jungle Holos are tough.

Sabrina’s Gengar and Erika’s Venusaur due to having more exposed holo. Also pretty much every holo from Neo Discovery and Neo Revelation due to print lines.

I recently managed to snag a super clean raw Umbreon with flawless holo, only for it to have 20/80 top/bottom centering. :slightly_frowning_face:

Typhlosion 17/111 from Neo Genesis and Yanma 17/75 from Neo Discovery.

Rank 1- Prerelease clefable

The prerelease cards are a pain, I’ve handled probably a hundred of the Dark Gyarados Prerelease and still haven’t found a good gem contender.

I read this more often.
And now I wonder; how are pre-release cards stamped? Aren’t they just stamped on a full sheet (resulting in pre-release Raichu ‘oopsie’) or do they hire an intern just handling one card at a time through a special press to stamp them?

Really interesting insight that makes perfect sense. I wonder if the same issue comes up in other sets?

It is interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts. I think at the end of the day even though we get so frustrated trying to find these difficult to find cards in mint condition, it also is a lot of fun and makes the cards very valuable if you can find them.

It’s more about how they were released and distributed, loose at events Etc

You mean like just loose cards and not like e.g. the movie promo’s in the plastic wrapping?
Damn… indeed that kills quality. I remember how I used to receive promo cards from Score Entertainment for DBZ, just punch of them loose in a just-a-bit-to-big box.

Yeah that’s why the pop is so low for them esp. considering how plentiful they are except for Clefable

Pulled one of these recently and it has probably one of the worst factory lines I’ve ever seen. Got so excited because I bought loose packs and didn’t expect a holo, then I get one and first thing I see is _______________

In the world of baseball cards, I’ve heard that the first and last cards in some sets are hard to find in good condition. Kids used to exclusively use elastic bands for storage and the first and last cards where the ones that took the brunt.

Moral of the story is store cards in random order?

PSA is very strict on surface scratches lately.

These cards like the persian / magneton / moltres have high foil surface area, so more likely to get scratched. The images of the pokemon are relatively small on the cards.

That’s a good point. I sent in a few 1st edition base holos recently that all came back NM 7 except the Venusaur was a PSA 8. I think solely because there is a lot less holo showing through so less overall scratching.

Yeah, i think they are strict on these scratches. The edge wear / centering, maybe a teeny bit more leniant upon recently. But yeah, really at the end of the day, it’s the luck of the draw. But Psa apparently goes through 3 different people looking at your cards, so they take the average from those 3 right?

They have alot of standards, i don’t know about honestly… but i’m sure scott of Gary would as they are affiliated moreso with psa directly.

Team Rocket Rainbow Energy joins in the difficult to grade group for the same reason.

Sent maybe 7 pack fresh no 10s
