I realize that it’s probably borderline blasphemy for some for me to mention Digimon on a Pokemon board (my apologies in advance ), but are there any fans of both out there? The recent anime release of Digimon Tri (a sequel to the first season) piqued my interest in it again. While the cards never really caught on for me, the digital pet Digivices were a pretty big part of my childhood.
All of those minus the orange one I actually kept since I was a kid. As a random factoid about me, my first authentic pack of Pokemon cards was a Misty Starter Deck, which my mom bought to make me feel better after the blue Digivice I had ended up in the laundry. My sister had the orange one as a kid, but traded it for an Erika’s Dragonair card.
Nostalgia led me to eBay recently to search for the Digivice I played with as a kid and if it weren’t for my experience with throwing money at Pokemon cards now, I probably would’ve laughed at what they were going for and X’d out the window instantly. But lo and behold, here I am, a decent chunk of change later, re-experiencing yet another part of my childhood. No regrets, kid me would be proud.
Yeah they did release a Japanese 15th Anniversary version on the Bandai Online Hobby Shop. Unfortunately missed the boat on that one and I refuse to pay the $200-$300 asking price on eBay for them. The Japanese versions of these are actually significantly higher quality (what else is new) and the game itself is way more in depth… I am holding onto hope that they will either re-issue the Anniversary one or release an English version.
The new 15th anniversary edition ones are the ones going for $200-300 simply because they have more features and are already out of print. The old English releases from back in the day, depending on condition, can still fetch about $50-100 bucks though.
If anyone is going to hunt on eBay for them, note that there are quite a few different versions and LOTS of very convincing fakes.
Honestly I’m no super expert myself and had to do a fair amount of research before I could make a comfortable purchase. It’s preeeetty complicated and depends on which one you are looking to buy. I was able to find this guide on another forum which provides a pretty decent starting point to weeding out fakes:
The most popular digivice would probably be the one from the first series (the ones I have in orange/blue), so I’ll try to provide a few tips on that.
To start, there’s four different versions of the Digivice: Japanese, English Version 1, English Version 2, and English Version 2.5. They each came in specific color schemes with different Digimon (either obtainable or encountered) in each, and the first step to weeding out a fake would be to make sure that the specs of the one you’re buying matches with an official release.
The one that is most commonly faked is the English Version 2 Digivice, and as far as I know, the Japanese one was never counterfeited.
The differences between an official one and a counterfeit one are not always immediately apparent on the physical body, but do your research and know what a real one looks like. The Japanese ones have a larger square screen, while the English release has a smaller rectangular screen.
The differences in the game itself are much more apparent, but not crazy like some Pokemon game bootlegs tend to be. If you’ve played with an original, you’d notice things like some of the menus/sounds being slightly off, or the built in pedometer not being as accurate as a real one. Interestingly enough, the bootleg ones are able to connect with a real digivice (or even another bootleg) just fine.
Hope that’s at least a sufficient basic list, if anyone is actually looking to get one and needs more info, feel free to PM me and I’ll help in any way I can.
