DJ Gary's Stash

Welcome, and thanks for taking a look at the stash. My collecting story is a familiar one - grew up during pokemania, collected during of the first half of WOTC, fell out of the hobby as I got further into elementary school, then opened modern again with some friends in 2021.

After enjoying modern for a year I decided to restore my childhood collection that I sold away to a friend in the early 2000’s. Over the last few years I started with a collection goal of reclaiming some of my favorite WOTC holos and all Base 2 holos. I then expanded (and just about completed) my goal to obtain all the WOTC set holos, just need the crystal zard!

These sets were an amazing chunk of artwork for me to discover after getting back into the hobby. I’m hoping to complete these soon!

More continuous artwork! And from an artist I wish did more during this era, Kanako Eo.

These are certainly a less popular set of cards from the modern era, but around 2016 I was playing a bit of competitive online so these cards were popular and I really grew to enjoy their bombastic layout.

Awesome collection my friend. Great showcase. Looks like you did a great job in restoring your childhood collection.

Looking forward to you sharing this, specially the JP promos and other special sets.

Thanks a lot for your collection thread.

Cheers!

nice collection!!

Great stuff man. Everything one needs seems to be here, especially considering the upcoming items you’ve mentioned you have to share. Looks delightful and real purdy. I particularly will like to see your artist sections–I remember you mentioning you like all the best artists, so that will be a treat =)

Updated the stash with some additions (crystals, shadowless!) to the set holos collection, WOTC and later promos, and the beginning of my modern collection! Still to come are some small artist collections, postcards, ex-era, vending, and carddass

ex Era: ex’s Holos, and Reverse Holos

image

This era hold some of my favorite art as it showcases an elite selection of artists with dynamic, colorful, and unique styles. I will continue to add to this collection, especially the gold stars and reverses, but I have gotten to a point where I have most of my top arts from each set.
No Power Keepers reverses since the stamp logo is… kinda ugly
No Team Aqua / Magma bc the art style is… not my cup of tea
Till next time!!

Holos and Gold Stars - I generally enjoy getting the holo rares from the first few sets since the reverses are still the e reader style, starting with Hidden Legends I typically picked up the reverse holo rares.

ex Holos - someday I'd like to get a copy of each card in some form. I have a lot of JP exs for their affordability

I’ve updated this section since I moved all my reverses into a side loading zipper binder. Eventually the binder will be filled since I have planned out how many of each set I will have (in multiples of 12). I decided not to organize the binder in any specific way except to group evolution lines to show continuity between artists.

e-Reader, Ruby & Sapphire, Sandstorm, Dragon Reverse Holos - I dont have many of my favorite e reader reverses due to their cost, so sometime I’ll post my non holo e reader binder.

Even though this style reverse is my least favorite from Gen III, there is still some amazing art to appreciate. Some standouts for me are the Kusube’s Slobro, Kusajima’s Golduck, Kimura’s Camerupt, and Komiya’s Whiscash. Favorite: Arita’s Shelgon

Hidden Legends and FireRed & LeafGreen Reverse Holos - HL starts the era that gives every card the true holofoil treatment. It gives common cards with fantastic art a boost to its aesthetics with a subtle touch of increased rarity and challenge for collectors. Discovering and studying artist styles in these sets was so much fun and something I wish I could experience for the first time again.

Hidden Legends is conventionally popular among collectors for its lack of gold stars and somewhat underwhelming ex’s, but the normal card art is still strong throughout. Kusube’s Starmie and Chinchou, Kimura’s Corsola, and Kizuki’s Castform forms are some of my most liked. Favorite: Aoki’s Ninetales.

FRLG is such a banger of a set for obvious reasons, but some of the less popular 151 pokemon really shine here. Komiyas Victreebel line, Umemotos Rats, and Kusube’s Marowak line always get my attention. Favorite: Arita’s Squirtle

Team Rocket Returns Reverse Holos - An E4 favorite, this set exudes sinister, criminal energy…until you get to that togepi! I love the fact that you can still get galaxy swirls in the holo pattern among the array of energy symbols, and its here where we first get gold Pokemon names for the HRare cards and our first set stamp, which are different colors for H rares too.

Way too many amazing art to list one by one but some of the best for me include: Baba’s Magby, Arita’s Marowak, Kimura’s Houndour, Komiya’s Yanma
Favorite: Nakaoka’s Dnite

Deoxys Reverse Holos - I actually really like the reverse pattern for this set and think it really fits well with the concept of Deoxys.

This set is LOADED! Kusube’s terrifying Sableye and wacked out Slugma, Baba’s Starmie, Wakai’s Dusclops (who sadly only has cards from this set), Nakamura’s Karp line, Kusajima’s epic Manectric, and Komiya’s Pelipper were some of my first pickups from this set. Favorite: Kizuki’s Jirachi

Emerald and Unseen Forces Reverse Holos - Ex Emerald is known for being a hodge-podge mess of JP decks and promos, but I really like the set stamp, especially the green on the HRare cards, and the focus on the gen III pokemon gives it some set cohesion. Unseen forces has some of the best variety of great artists in the common uncommon slots, and a really unique reverse holo pattern that creates some cool effects when there are print lines (see: Hitmontop).

For Emerald I think the start trio rares are an awesome set from three great legends of the TCG. The Kaito’s Ray, Jusajuma’s Dodrio, and Kimura’s Swellow all have killer poses. Favorite: Harada’s Battle Factory

Listing highlights for Unseen Forces is too much but I’m going to do it anyway: Sunflora, Chinchou line, Cyndaquil line, Corsola, Slowking, Electabuzz, Hitmons, and Miltank are all so fun. Favorite: Poliwhirl

Delta Species and Legend Maker Reverse Holos - Delta Species introduced delta pokemon which unlocked a whole new dimension of TCG lore but also creates some really cool card aesthetics and concepts. While I think the reverse holo pattern for the delta species cards aren’t as exciting as the previous sets, the set stamps are still great.

Legend Maker’s reverse holo is simple but super effective, making even the least powerful pokemon feel like OP holos with the galaxy foil treatment. I think this set has my highest completion percentage.

The set cohesion with Delta Species is really what makes it special. I have some slabs that I'll add in here at some point, but there are still plenty of gems to point out - Nakamura's Staryu, Komiya's Sandshrew, and Kusajima's Metang. *Favorite:* Kusajima's Dragonair

Legend Maker was probably my first love when it comes to ex-era reverse holos, and the only set I’d consider completing fully at this point. Kusube’s majestic Girafarig, Himeno’s epic Tentacreul, Kizuki’s playful Graveler and Victreebel, Nakamura’s regal Lunatone, Kusajuma’s menacing Aerodactyl, Komiya’s in-game-setting Keckleon, and Toyama’s heartbreaking Omanytemake my top cut. Favorite: Eo’s Growlithe

Holon Phantoms and Crystal Guardians Reverse Holos - Holon Phantoms - pfew. Just banger after banger with some really powerful 'mons from front to back. Crystal Guardians is another with good set cohesion,

HP, Where to begin? The third page was intentionally mapped to be a gauntlet of terrifying powerhouses you’d see in some romhack’s Elite 4. All the Deoxys forms are epic, especially Attack and Speed. I dont love every Saito card, but the Cradily is awesome. Arita’s Aerodactyl ad Rayquaza, Fukuda’s Kingdra and Kabutops, Himeno’s Belossum and Flygon always catch my eye. Favorite: Kusajima’s Gyarados

As a whole, Crystal Guardians isn’t at the top of my list but there are certainly some standouts to mention. Komiya’s dugtrio and Krabby, Arita’s Swalot, and all of the Kanto starter line cards are very well done. Favorite: Kusajima’s Squirtle, which I happened to pull myself back in the day.

Dragon Frontiers Reverse Holos

And finally, we have Dragon Frontiers. Composted (almost) entirely of delta species, and shows some nice creativity with matching pokemon types and their appearance. When done right, such cards have an extra layer of pop to them (think: Gold Star Delta Species Gyarados!).

Kusajima and Komiya are the real front runners here, with the Wooper, Ninetales, Dratini, Vibrava, Seel, Horsea all in their classic styles. Gotta shoutout Kizuki’s Mantine, and Nakamura’s work in the set too. Favorite: Ledian

Thanks everyone for reading or checking out the photos and I hope I’ve inspired you to check these sets out further, beyond the ex and gold stars that get more of the spotlight. I’ll be updating the holos, exs and gold star sections soon as well, so stay tuned. Until next time.

Cheers!

I agree the power keepers reverses are icky.

1998 Vending Series

Early after returning to the hobby I focused a lot of my collection dollars into the more conventional sets from the WOTC era, ex reverse holo cards, and modern, but eventually began to venture off the yellow boarder road. I was introduced to the Japanese vending series after browsing Scott’s older Youtube videos and was surprised that I had missed all of these cards as a Pokemon-crazed kid (who didn’t shy away from Japanese cards at the flea markets I’d frequent). But I’m actually glad I did, because uncovering and collecting this set made it feel like I was in the golden era of the hobby again.

After doing some research I decided to try and look for a mostly completed set to save some money, and since I’m not much of a condition collector it only took a few weeks to find and win a decent auction. That first mail day was amazing, organizing so much never before seen vintage artwork into a fresh binder. After noting the cards I was missing, I began the hunt for these individually. This was nice to make the goal more of a long term project.

You’ll notice I have not started the extra set cards for the 3rd series, which I plan to knock out at a later date. I did replace the cards that have holo editions in the quick starter set - I never was a purist when it came to these things.

Vending isn’t quite complete without the Masaki promos. What can I say that hasn’t already been preached on this forum for over a decade: rarity, maybe the most unique release ever, amazing artwork, hard to grade. Thankfully I’m mostly a binder collector.

1997 Carddass Set

Another set I discovered during a smpratt public Youtube rabbit hole spelunking. The art speaks for itself and my favorite feature is that each card depicts an attack. Not much else to add that hasn’t already been said.

Love it man. I love your updates both because our tastes align, but also because I love your cleanness of presentation and your style. Glad you got carddass '97, it’s a perfect collection of cards. I never actually wound up getting 000 or checklist… having it complete would be nice, so this is obviously especially nice to see!

The set brings me incalculable joy, I’ve no doubt it will do the same for you man. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the nice words! I often find my self going back to your collection thread for new cards to pick up and formatting inspiration, even if I don’t have the patience to make such a cleanly curated page . I’m hoping to see if you’ll post an ex era update someday with some great artwork/artist appreciation blurbs!

Hahh, thanks man, I’m flattered. Well I have one more update I must post when I get the final card, but I haven’t been able to afford that for a while, so who knows when.

But after that, well… you can be sure I’ll have quite a few ex updates that I have in store :pikasmirk: (oh and the artist blurbs will be a plenty!)

Naoyo Kimura Collection

Kimura’s work always felt nostalgic and comforting to me, which is probably because of his half of the Souther Islands set that I have such distinct and happy memories of. I decided to start a Kimura artist collection in early 2023 and have had a lot of fun obtaining art from eras I typically collect (Gens 1-3) and ones that I usually don’t spend much time on (4 and up).

I used an existing Kimura checklist that was shared here but you may notice some cards missing. I decided to only collect one of each art, as some of his cards are duplicate artworks in different releases. This also means no additional rarities or languages, the reverse holos or Japanese you see are just what I already had or happened to pick up. Therefore, I don’t consider this to be comprehensive, but I do believe I got each unique card art up until a few sets ago*.

*I still have not been able to found ONE DANG CARD - a stunfisk that is exclusive to the Everyone’s Exciting Battle deck which was a Japanese exclusive. Mercari, eBay, everything I’ve searched has been empty. If anyone has one they’re interested in letting go, let me know!

Some extras I’ve included are postcards, jumbos, and Fan Club mini-jumbo. Still on my list of peripherals to get are some of the early 90s-2000’s Pokemon Center Exclusive postcards that are very hard to find, All the Southern Island postcards, and Pokemon Tales books. If any other Kimura enjoyers know of other cool stuff I’d love to grow the collection more.

Till next time

I think this postcard is Kimura…

Always interesting to see the full spectrum of certain artist to see how the art has changed and how many of the cards are ones i’ve enjoyed so many times. Especially older stuff like vending zapdos and light pokemon are the ones i’ve enjoyed numerous times but it’s delightful to see also his newer works have a lot of illustrations i’ve deliberately included in some of my goals

Yeah I agree. There definitely was a period in BW where his work feels more stock CGI but almost everything after that feels like a more natural progression in style. His vending cards are the most crude and off-beat depictions of the pokemon themselves, almost Komiya-esque.

HGSS Evolution Item Set

imageimage

In the HGSS era, the Pokemon company decided to create a mini-set of pokemon with art featuring the respective items that allowed them to evolve. This includes evolution stones (that were actively featured in gens I-IV), trade evolution items like the dragon scale, Magmarizer, and held evolution items such as razor fang and claw. The Call of Legends set gave us some ‘alternate arts’ for some of the pokemon. I’m taking the liberty of calling the out-of-focus blob behind Sunflora a sun stone

Curiously, Scizor and Steelix cards were released in this era without the metal coat in the art - or at least as far as I can tell. Is the metal coat supposed to be something they wear?

Then there were some Pokemon that were never printed during these sets (most were Gen III which didn’t have much representation at all) that would have qualified for an item artwork.

Stones: Cloyster and Ludicolo (Water), Shiftry (Leaf), Delcatty (Moon), Roserade was printed but with Lost link style artwork (Shiny), Gallade (Dawn)
Items: Gorebyss and Huntail (Deep Sea Scale/Tooth), Dusknoir (Reaper Cloth), Rhyperior (Protector)

If anyone has any more info or insight to this little pocket of TCG artwork lore please share!
