Do prefer Vintage or Modern cards?

Hey Guys,

as I get more and more back into Pokémon collection I realize that I really focus on vintage cards and have barely any interest in the new products that come out. I was wondering. Is it just me? What do you prefer? Do you like vintage cards more or newer ones? Or do you even have one set that you prefer over all the others?

Vintage, I think in total I’ve purchased 5 modern cards. Any money I could spend on modern could just be used to buy more WOTC

Old vintage English and Japanese cards are the best in my opinion (gen 1 and gen 2). But I have also collected a decent amount of modern Japanese set cards and promos because of their amazing artworks. I don’t see any appeal in modern English cards.

Modern is my preference. Modern features more artists and I just love how creative and distinct each artist’s work is.

Older rare minter better, bw and back for me :+1:

I think it all has a place for me. WotC for my more serious collecting side, modern Japanese because of the exclusives as well as the personal better eye appeal/card layout. Modern English when I want to keep it fresh and open boosters for fun/find another random $2 GX for my modern binder. I really do enjoy a little bit of everything.

I’d say >90% of this site is going to say “vintage” (WOTC) is their favorite.

This might be a stupid question but Is the old ex series through diamond and pearl sets considered vintage now, or is it everything thats just WOTC vintage? What is the vintage cut off set or date? I grew up with the diamond and pearl sets so its weird to consider them vintage now (i’m getting old) lol.

vintage Japanese all day

If it’s WOTC for vintage and then Nintendo-onwards for modern, I’d say modern just because I love the Ruby & Sapphire era so much. Whichever that generation falls into is what I’d go with!

Vintage and graded is my preference for collecting.

All sets are great and part of the history.

I really love the artwork for modern but it’s a hassle trying to complete 200+ card sets in English so I typically stick to buying singles of cards I really like or scouring bulk bins to get a lot of cool cards for the cheap.

When it comes to hardcore collecting, I have near complete sets of 2010 and earlier though as Pokemon kind of loses its nostalgia for me after that.

Vintage. Easily. That includes EX era stuff, as well.

I have tried very hard to get into modern stuff, but I am not a fan of the card template, the 85 million different types of rarities nor the designs of the chase cards.

WOTC FTW

Vintage baby !

WOTC! The golden era!! “the older, the rarer, the minter, the better”.

I also dabble into modern product if something catches my attention. Here are some examples,
Evolutions
Generations
Shinning legends
Scream promos
Hidden fates

I like what I grew up with best, which would be anything English up through fossil/jungle + Japanese vending. That being said, I love the modern Japanese full art trainers so much! So I’d say it’s probably a tie for me.

Like many here, the reason I got back into the hobby as an adult was to reclaim the cards I knew as a child, which of course are now “vintage” cards. We all have nostalgia for our childhood.

Then there’s a certain appeal to old, rare things simply because they are old and rare. I think that can be said about any hobby.

And finally, I just think the old cards have a simple and elegant look to them that is very appealing to me. @cerulean mentioned something I agree with, I don’t really like the look of the modern “chase” cards. I’m not a fan of full art and when cards have too much going on in the design. Another thing I don’t like is when cards are CGI. But when the cards are hand-drawn and not over-the-top, I think the modern stuff can look just great.
