If you have say 4 rare Charizard cards, exactly the same with varying conditions. The pop rate of PSA lets just say is 10.
Is it a bad idea to get all 4 graded and increase the pop rate by 40%? Does that decrease the value overall?
I guess inside this question is Does Population Count make a huge difference in card value?
This always confused me because if you have a card graded with a POP of 2 that doesn’t mean there are only 2 cards out there, it could just mean its not a desirable card to get graded. So posting it for sale “POP 2” isn’t that impressive if the card its self isn’t impressive. So POP count can’t by DEFAULT raise value.
It depends. With a card like T17, that’s a sub pop 20 because it’s hard to grade. But with Kingdra reverse from TRR, that’s more of an interest thing. It depends on the card.
I don’t think people check the pop report to decide whether something is worth a certain price all that much. What’s matters more is how easy it is to find coupled with how many people are looking to buy it. If in your example the last couple copies sold for $1000 and there are no copies available on the market and 1000 people are actively looking for it, then if you grade 4 of them and list one, no one is going to look at the pop report and think, “hmm there’s more of these, this is worth less than $1000 now.” Even if someone does, there’s 999 other people who will snatch it as soon as it hits the market.
And no, pop count by default doesn’t increase value. I always chuckle when I see a something like an unlimited non-Holo PSA 4 or something and someone says, POP 1!!! It’s like, yeah because no one is dumb enough to grade a played card that you can get in PSA 10 1st edition for cost.
